About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of strategic transport plans and the early-stage design of transport projects that will shape Hertfordshire’s future. You will be responsible for creating and implementing transport strategies that align with our Local Transport Plan, ensuring the county’s transport network is efficient, sustainable, and future-ready.

You’ll work closely with district and borough councils, providing expert advice on transport and highways matters, and responding to statutory consultations such as Local and Neighbourhood Plans. You’ll also oversee early scheme development, ensuring projects align with our strategic goals and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development and consultation of strategic transport plans
  • Supporting early-stage transport scheme development
  • Representing the Council at meetings and public events
  • Advising senior officers, councillors, and stakeholders on transport issues

About you

We’re looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with a passion for sustainable transport and strategic planning.

Essential Criteria:

  • A relevant degree (e.g. Geography, Transport Planning, Engineering) or equivalent experience
  • Experience and knowledge in transport, highways, Local Plans and sustainable development
  • Proven ability to develop and implement transport strategies
  • Experience working within a democratic or public sector environment
  • Proven ability to develop and implement transport strategies
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical skills, including data collation and report writin

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in financial management
  • Project and programme management skills
  • Experience working with councillors and external stakeholders
