Job summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

The primary delivery location for this position is HMNB Devonport, Plymouth, PL2 DBG.

Please note, due to the level of security, this role is reserved for UK nationals only.

Hybrid and flexible working can be considered for this post but will need regular workplace attendance due to security constraints. Candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before submitting an application. In person attendance is expected to be 60% dependant on business needs.

Job description

As a Project Risk Manager, you will utilise and develop your excellent leadership and communication skills and be proactive in explaining risk management processes. Working closely with project managers and the rest of project team, you will support and guide people with the pro-active identification and on-going management of risks, both threats and opportunities, to enable the successful delivery outcomes required. This is a dynamic and forward-thinking role as you engage with stakeholders at different levels within our organisation. You will broaden and share your experience within the project risk environment with the opportunity for personal development.

Whilst this role is advertised as having a permanent duty station at Devonport, occasional attendance at Abbey Wood, Bristol and Rosyth, Scotland may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitating risk workshops on projects to identify and manage specific project / programme related threats opportunities and issues.
  • Managing the risk tool project and / or programme activities to ensure quality and accuracy of data therein.
  • Providing the project team with pro-active risk information to allow project team to understand current risk position, risk proximity and pro-active management actions.
  • Communicating key project threat and opportunity management data to key members of the project, programme, and leadership team, and to be able to recommend key items for escalation within the business.
  • Communicating and influencing leadership within the SDA projects and portfolios and supply chain within the risk technical field.
  • Engaging and collaborating with diverse functions, including scheduling and finance, to proactively enhance and add value to critical risk data.
  • Working alongside external stakeholders to develop and maintain integrated processes, acting as an intelligent customer to analyse and optimise key data.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential skills/criteria:

  • Understanding of risk (threats and opportunity) management in a project, programme, or portfolio environment.
  • Understanding of variety of stakeholder management experience both internal or/and external at various levels.
  • Risk specific knowledge and experience and / or APM qualification/ APM Project Risk Management (PRM)/ Single Subject Risk Certificate Level 1

If not already held, successful candidates will be supported to undertake the required membership below:

  • Prepared to become a member of a professional body relevant to your role.

Desirable Criteria

  • It would be desirable to have 2 x A Levels grades A* to E in any subject or equivalent.
  • Desirable to have to have some experience of a project environment.



Qualifications

Minimum of 5 GCSE or equivalent grades 9 – 4 (A* to C) including English and Maths.

Evidence of the Qualification/Licence/Membership will be required at interview.

All qualifications/licences/memberships declared must be held at point of application and be in date.
