Job description
What will the successful candidate be doing?
We are looking for a Technical Programme Manager to join AISI in a senior role with significant organisational and technical delivery impact across the Institute. This is a leadership position for an individual who can operate across complex, high-priority work, bringing clarity, structure, and momentum to ambiguous problems and helping technical teams deliver effectively against shared goals.
As a visible leader within the team, you will play an active role in shaping the culture. You will work across teams to establish the planning, delivery, and coordination mechanisms needed to support high-quality execution in a research driven complex environment.
This role is suited to someone who can take an open-ended goal or problem, define what needs to be solved, develop delivery options, design a practical path forward, and lead others to implement it. You will act as an owner or architect for programme delivery structures, planning systems, and organisational processes that are used across AISI, and will help shape the tools, infrastructure, and ways of working that many teams rely on.
You will influence how engineering efforts and projects are managed across the Institute, primarily through strong judgement, credibility, collaboration, coaching, and the sharing of best practice rather than through formal authority. You may act as the technical programme lead for large multi-team initiatives, helping to align stakeholders, manage dependencies, and ensure delivery over both immediate and longer-term horizons.
Role summary
You will work across AISI to strengthen technical programme delivery and improve how teams plan, coordinate, and execute complex work. In practice, this will mean:
- Contributing actively to the culture, standards, and delivery maturity of the organisation
- Leading complex, cross-cutting programmes or problem areas that span multiple teams, workstreams, or time horizons
- Taking ambiguous or open-ended goals and defining clear programme structures, milestones, delivery plans, and routes to execution
- Acting as an architect or owner for planning, delivery, and organisational systems used across teams
- Designing and improving core tools, processes, governance mechanisms, and operating cadences that support effective delivery across AISI
- Leading multi-team initiatives, ensuring dependencies, risks, sequencing, and resourcing considerations are understood and actively managed
- Influencing technical project management across AISI through expertise, coaching, and the sharing of best practice rather than relying on formal authority
- Working closely with technical, research, policy, operations, and delivery colleagues to align priorities and translate strategic goals into actionable plans
- Supporting teams to identify delivery risks early, resolve blockers, and adapt plans as organisational and technical needs evolve
- Helping ensure that delivery approaches are scalable, proportionate, and aligned with AISI’s long-term institutional needs
Salary & Benefits
We are hiring individuals at all ranges of seniority and experience within this research unit, and this advert allows you to apply for any of the roles within this range. - Level 4 - Total Package £85,000 - £95,000 inclusive of a base salary £42,495 plus additional technical talent allowance of between £42,505 - £52,505
- Level 5 - Total Package £105,000 - £115,000 inclusive of a base salary £55,805 plus additional technical talent allowance of between £49,195 - £59,195
- Level 6 - Total Package £125,000 - £135,000 inclusive of a base salary £68,770 plus additional technical talent allowance of between £56,230 - £66,230

Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated ability to act as a visible senior leader with impact beyond an immediate team, contributing to organisational culture, standards, and delivery effectiveness.
- Significant experience delivering strategic impact across large, complex, or ambiguous programmes, problem areas, or organisational priorities.
- Strong track record of taking open-ended goals or problems, defining the problem clearly, identifying delivery options, and designing and leading an effective route to implementation.
- Experience acting as an owner or architect for programme delivery structures, planning systems, governance approaches, or organisational processes used across multiple teams or workstreams.
- Proven ability to create, improve, or scale tools, processes, or operating mechanisms that are relied upon by many teams.
- Strong technical fluency, with the ability to work credibly with engineers, researchers, and other technical specialists in complex delivery environments.
- Experience leading large cross-functional or multi-team programmes, including managing dependencies, risks, sequencing, and stakeholder alignment.
- Ability to influence technical programme or project management practices through judgement, coaching, facilitation, and sharing best practice rather than relying on formal authority.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary environments and translate broad strategic goals into clear, actionable plans and delivery outcomes.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working in research, advanced technology, digital, or other highly complex technical environments.
- Experience supporting delivery in areas involving machine learning, AI systems, or technically novel products or programmes.
- Experience designing or improving organisational planning, prioritisation, or governance mechanisms at scale.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, or supporting other programme managers, delivery staff, or technical leads.
- Experience working across technical, policy, operational, security, or programme delivery boundaries.
- Experience helping shape organisational ways of working, delivery culture, or programme management standards in a growing or evolving organisation.
- Familiarity with frontier AI, AI safety, AI evaluation, or related technical domains.

Office attendance

This role sits outside of the DDaT pay framework given the scope of this role requires in depth technical expertise in frontier AI safety, robustness and advanced AI architectures.
