Tenant Engagement Officer
Are you passionate about making a real difference in your community, building strong relationships, and ensuring that every tenant’s voice is heard? We believe our tenants should have a genuine say in how their homes and communities are managed. We’re looking for a motivated, approachable and people-focused Tenant Engagement Officer to work directly with Reading Borough Council tenants and leaseholders, empowering them to influence decisions, shape services, and create positive changes that benefit neighbourhoods across Reading.
We seek the best talent from the widest pool of people as diversity and inclusion is the key to our success. Reading Borough Council is a Disability Confident Employer and is committed to the recruitment and continued employment of people with disabilities.
About the Role:
This is a role for someone who thrives on variety and connection. One day you might be running a workshop to help tenants develop the skills and confidence to take part in service improvement projects; the next, you could be visiting community groups to listen to local concerns and spark fresh ideas for change.
You’ll act as a bridge between tenants and the Housing & Communities Service, making sure tenants are not only informed about what’s happening but have the tools, platforms, and opportunities to actively shape those decisions. You’ll be at the heart of creating a culture where tenant voices are valued, where feedback genuinely influences policy, and where communities feel empowered to work together for lasting impact
Key responsibilities:
In this varied and rewarding role, you will:
- Recruit, support and empower tenants and leaseholders to get involved in developing and improving our housing services.
- Develop innovative ways to consult and engage with tenants, ensuring we reach diverse communities.
- Support tenant panels, scrutiny groups and community projects, helping to embed a culture of tenant-led service improvement.
- Work with colleagues, councillors, and partner organisations to promote best practice in tenant involvement.
- Produce engaging communications and use social media to publicise opportunities and share successes.
About you:
You’ll have experience in a customer-focused environment, ideally working with tenant or community groups, and a good understanding of housing legislation and national standards. You’ll be a strong communicator, skilled at building relationships, presenting information clearly, and encouraging people to take part. Organised and proactive, you’ll be comfortable running projects, keeping accurate records, and meeting deadlines.
You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.
Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:
Work Together as one team - work collaboratively, with each other and with our partners, and demonstrate the Team Reading values in everything we do
Drive Efficiency - show initiative, be adaptable to change and put forward ideas to help improve delivery and efficiency. Take responsibility for our own learning and development and for reaching our potential
Be Ambitious - be demanding of our own performance – striving to be even better – and be prepared to engage with and challenge leaders in a constructive and positive way
Make a Difference to Reading - maintain the highest levels of customer service and be flexible and willing to provide the services needed at the time they are needed
Our offer:
We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition is strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.
