We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional to join our friendly and supportive Financial Services team.

This is a varied role combining capital accounting with responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Council’s treasury management function. It would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, applying technical knowledge and working with colleagues across the organisation.

Working closely with the Principal Accountant, you will help to prepare and monitor the Council’s capital budgets and five-year capital programme. You will also support the closure of the capital accounts, contribute to the Statement of Accounts and complete capital-related government returns.

A key part of the role will be the day-to-day management of the Council’s cash flow and treasury activities. This will include monitoring cash balances, preparing cash-flow forecasts and placing funds in accordance with the Council’s approved arrangements. As a district council, we have a significant investment portfolio, making this an interesting opportunity to develop or apply your treasury management experience.

You will also provide financial advice to officers across the Council, liaise with internal and external auditors and assist with VAT requirements.

About you

You will be AAT Level 4 qualified or part-qualified as an accountant. You will have experience of working in a finance role and a good understanding of budget preparation, monitoring and year-end accounts.

You should be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities and explaining financial information clearly to colleagues who may not have a finance background. You will also be an effective team member, with strong attention to detail and a practical approach to solving problems.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience of treasury management or cash investment
  • Experience of preparing and monitoring budgets
  • Experience of supporting or completing year-end accounts
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and confidence in using financial systems
  • The ability to analyse financial information accurately
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • The ability to plan and prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • The confidence to work independently and provide financial advice
  • A collaborative, flexible and solution-focused approach

It would be helpful if you also have:

  • Experience of capital accounting and capital financing
  • Experience of working in local government or another public sector organisation
  • Knowledge or experience of VAT
