Are you a passionate ESOL tutor who believes in the power of education to change lives?

Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking an enthusiastic and committed English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Tutor to join our Adult Skills Hub. This is an exciting opportunity to support both young people aged 16-18 and adult learners to develop their English language skills, confidence, independence and progression into further learning, employment and community life.

Working within our Skills and Employment team, you will deliver engaging, inclusive and high-quality teaching that supports learners from a wide range of backgrounds, including those facing barriers to learning and progression.

About the role

As an ESOL Tutor, you will:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality ESOL programmes for young people and adults.
  • Create engaging lesson plans, schemes of work and learning materials tailored to learner needs.
  • Support learners to achieve qualifications, improve communication skills and build confidence.
  • Monitor and record learner progress through Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Provide effective assessment, feedback and pastoral support.
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion, safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities in all aspects of your work.
  • Support progression into further learning, training and employment opportunities.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, quality improvement activities and learner recruitment initiatives.

About you

We are looking for someone who can inspire and motivate learners whilst creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

You will have:

Essential qualifications and knowledge

  • A recognised teaching qualification such as DTLLS, PCET, PGCE, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of current teaching, learning and assessment practices.
  • An understanding of community learning and the needs of disadvantaged learners.

Essential experience

  • Experience teaching, training or tutoring young people and adults.
  • Experience of improving learner outcomes and quality of education.
  • Experience of applying quality assurance and quality improvement processes.

Essential skills

  • Strong teaching and learner assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational and administrative abilities.
  • Confidence using IT to support learning and develop teaching resources.
  • A commitment to delivering an inclusive and learner-centred service.
