Job summary

The successful candidates will hold key roles in the TV Team. The team is responsible for a wide range of high profile policy areas including supporting the UK broadcasting sectors to adapt and succeed in a rapidly changing media environment, engaging with public service and international broadcasters and on-demand providers, and ensuring appropriate regulation and protections for audiences.

The TV Team sits within the wider Media and International Directorate (MINT) which covers a broad range of work on sectors including: TV, radio, press, and advertising; as well as having a key role leading the department’s international work.

Job description

These are varied and fast-paced roles focused on a a range of topical and reactive issues concerning television in the UK, often at fast pace and with significant political interest and exposure.

Post holders will support policy development, including working towards potential legislation, on issues such as protecting audiences from harmful content; supporting the future sustainability of our public service media; the future role of content regulation in the television, video-on-demand, and online sectors such as YouTube; and policy relating to broadcasting mergers.

Post holders will also help manage the Team’s relationships with a number of high-profile TV stakeholders. This may include broadcasters such as Sky; public service media providers such as ITV and Channel 4; global tech platforms; TV manufacturers and video-on-demand providers such as Disney and Netflix.

Please note that, on occasion, the types of content under discussion can be of an adult or otherwise distressing nature.

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience, please note that the desirable skills will only be used in the event of tied candidates:

Essential criteria:

  • Written and oral communication skills – including the ability to succinctly explain complex issues to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Delivering at pace – taking responsibility for delivering high-quality, timely results, even when facing pressure or changing priorities.
  • A proven ability to identify, analyse and assess evidence from a range of different sources to inform effective decision-making.
  • Stakeholder management skills – able to facilitate and support engagement with key stakeholders including Ofcom, media providers, and other government departments.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience working in policy development is helpful, but not essential for the right candidate.
  • Knowledge of the television sector or another regulated sector.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths and Experience.

To apply for this vacancy, you will need to submit the following documents which will assessed against the experience success profile:

  • A behaviour statement of 250 words on Making Effective Decisions which will be assessed against the behaviour success profile.
  • A CV setting out your career history, with key responsibilities and achievements. Please ensure you provide employment history that relates to the essential and desirable criteria, and that any gaps in employment history within the last 2 years are explained. The CV should not exceed more than 2 x A4 pages and you should insert your CV into the "Job History" section on the Civil Service Jobs application form.
  • A Statement of Suitability (max 500 words) explaining how you consider your personal skills, qualities and experience provide evidence of your suitability for the role in reference to the essential requirements highlighted.
