Job summary

This role is available as a designated homeworking role. Please note, some travel may be required. This post can be based at our sites in either Ryton-on-Dunsmore (CV8 3EN) or Durham (DL15 8DS). Hybrid working opportunities can also be discussed prior to you taking up your post.

Job description

This post is open to applicants who can meet the College’s nationality, UK residency and vetting requirements.

We're looking for a content designer to join our multi-disciplinary content team in the Communications and Engagement unit.

You'll design, write and edit web content that meets user needs and supports business objectives. You'll use evidence, data and research to inform your decisions, creating clear user journeys.

You'll work across the organisation with colleagues in Digital, Data and Technology, Legal, Commercial, and Culture and Inclusion, as well as external suppliers. You'll champion editorial standards and make sure our content is well governed and meets the right quality standards.

You'll collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to implement our content strategy and continuously improve what we do.


Person specification

Some of your responsibilities will include:

Content design and development

  • Lead the design, development and review of web content that meets user and business needs.
  • Make sure all web pages have a clear purpose, are easy to understand and are accessible.
  • Consider how content supports the end-to-end user journey.

Stakeholder engagement

  • Work with subject matter experts and senior stakeholders to develop and maintain content that supports user engagement with the College’s brand and products.
  • Guide stakeholders on publishing workflows and make sure content meets editorial, brand, legislative and professional standards.

Workload and risk management

  • Manage your workload, prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines.
  • Identify and report project risks and help develop solutions.

Technical development

  • Help scope requirements for technical projects, making sure they meet user and business needs.
  • Complete user acceptance testing before deployment.
  • Carry out post-deployment checks to make sure the website works correctly, reporting any issues promptly.

Project delivery

  • Take part in sprint planning sessions to support timely project delivery.

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience writing, editing and publishing content using style guides and plain English.
  • Understanding of content design good practices and how to apply them in an agile workflow.
  • Ability to translate technical or complex information into clear, accessible content.
  • Experience using content management systems and knowledge of analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Search Console or similar.
  • Ability to influence and build relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage your workload, prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Previous project management experience.
  • Experience of mentoring and/or coaching.
  • Knowledge of policing and the wider College of Policing operating environment.

x 2 Permanent positions and x 1 fixed term contract. The Fixed Term contract is offered on the understanding that it will only last as long as the stated contract length, there could be a possibility that it could be extended or made permanent should circumstances allow.
