Role: Welfare Assistant – Grade 3
Contract: January 5th 2026 until 31st July, with the possibility of it being extended. 32.5 hours a week, Grade 3 pro rata, 39 weeks

Purpose of the Role
To provide high-quality support to a KS1 child with Special Educational Needs, ensuring they are safe, supported, and fully included in school life. The role focuses on welfare, safety, emotional regulation, and access to learning under the direction of teaching and inclusion staff.
Key Responsibilities
Child Support
- Provide daily welfare and care support for an individual child with SEN in KS1.
- Assist the child in accessing learning activities as directed by the class teacher and SENCO.
- Support the child with emotional regulation, social interaction, and developing independence.
- Use appropriate strategies to promote positive behaviour and engagement.
- Supervise and support the child during transitions, unstructured times, and breaks as required.
Learning Support
- Prepare and adapt simple learning materials under guidance.
- Help the child stay focused and organised during classroom tasks.
- Support the implementation of the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), EHCP outcomes, or support plans.
- Give feedback to teachers on progress, concerns, or changes in the child's needs.
Welfare & Care
- Provide personal care as required (e.g., toileting, dressing, hygiene), following school safeguarding and dignity guidelines.
- Ensure that the child’s physical safety is maintained at all times.
- Support safe movement around the school, including during arrival, departure, and lunchtime.
Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and other support staff.
- Maintain professional, confidential, and positive communication with staff and parents.
- Participate in relevant training or staff meetings when required.
- Contribute to the ongoing review of support strategies and provision.
General Responsibilities
- Follow school policies on safeguarding, behaviour, SEN, equality, and health & safety.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties that support the inclusive ethos of Lache Primary School.
Person Specification – Grade 3 Welfare Assistant (KS1, SEN Support)
Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Training
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills (e.g., GCSE English/Maths or equivalent).
- Willingness to undertake relevant training (e.g., safeguarding, first aid, SEN support).
Experience
- Experience working or volunteering with young children in an educational, childcare, or similar setting.
- Experience supporting children with additional needs, learning difficulties, or emotional/behavioural needs (formal or informal).
Skills & Knowledge
- Understanding of the needs of young children, including those with SEN.
- Ability to follow teacher direction and implement support strategies consistently.
- Good communication skills with children and adults.
- Ability to build trusting, supportive relationships with children.
- Awareness of safeguarding and confidentiality requirements.
Personal Qualities
- Warm, patient, and caring approach.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure or when supporting challenging behaviour.
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing needs.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in a primary school environment, especially KS1 and or Early Years.
- Training or experience in supporting children with ASD, speech & language needs, SEMH, or other specific SEN profiles.
- Knowledge of strategies such as visual supports, structured routines, or communication aids.
- First Aid qualification.

Salary range
