This post sits in DNO Warhead Group’s Integrated Stockpile Management (ISM) Mk4A Chief Engineer (CE) organisation.

Integrated Stockpile Management (ISM) is responsible for the development, delivery and support of both the current in-service Trident Mk4A Re-Entry System, Future Technologies and the replacementA21/Mk7 Re-Entry System. These programmes are owned by Director ISM who maintains the responsibility for delivery of these programmes, provides direction on prioritisation and ensures joint ways of working. The ISO has two parts, the ISM A21/Mk7 and the ISM Mk4A team which share the responsibility for the MOD intelligent customer role across the entire CADMID cycle for the TRIDENT Re-Entry System (inc. applicable support equipment) and future TRES technologies.

The Mk4A team is responsible for the development, delivery and support of the in-service TRIDENT Re-Entry System (TRES). It acts as the MOD intelligent customer role across the CADMID cycle for the Mk4A TRES and support equipment and is the intelligent customer for TRES equipment designs throughout the manufacturing, in-service and disposal phases. It also supports Nuclear Weapon operations across the life cycle phases.​ The Chief Engineer ensures that engineering standards for Stockpile Management outputs and operations are defined and applied, and that safety and performance requirements are both met and maintained. The Safety and Environmental Manager will directly support the ISM Mk4A CE by delivering and implementing all safety and environmental aspects of the Mk4A project.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

The ISM Mk4A Safety & Environmental Manager role offers an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated professional with strong technical acumen, demonstrable engineering rigour, and a proven ability to apply risk‑based methodologies while maintaining full technical accountability.

The Safety and Environmental Manager is responsible for maintaining and executing Safety Management Arrangements and ensuring the provenance of technical evidence supporting warhead approvals and maintenance of the overall Safe to Operate case.

They hold a key product safety and performance role, operating within agreed bounds of Nuclear Weapon Approving Authority delegation to ensure technical approvals are in place to meet the nuclear weapons programme. This requires knowledge and understanding of warhead design, manufacturing and processing and associated safety justifications. The individual must act with credibility as the MoDs intelligent customer to enable the Nuclear Weapon Enterprise.

The post holder is responsible for defining and setting safety standards, maintaining systems engineering processes, and ensuring that they continue to be met through the following activities:

  • Ensure technical governance arrangements are met, including technically reviewing approval submissions, co-ordinating external advice, and ensuring a clear NWAA approvals baseline is maintained.
  • Chairing the Nuclear Weapons Modifications Committee/Trident (NWMC/T) for approval of warhead design and activity changes within delegation. For higher category changes, responsible for providing advice to the ISM Mk4A Chief Engineer.
  • Technical lead for the ISM Mk4A Chief Engineer’s Project, Safety and Environmental Committee, including ownership of the Safety and Environmental Management Plan
  • Chairing the Safety Working Group and Hazard Log Working Group, authorise Warhead Safety Information for use, provide technical lead for Periodic Reviews of Safety,
  • Maintain the Mk4A OME Safety Environmental Case Report and provide OME technical SQEP across the Mk4A team and delivering the Safety and Environmental Case Report (SECR).
  • Responsible for ensuring Warhead Service Life Assessment (SLA) outputs are agreed, and delivery continues to meet safety and performance assurance targets.
  • Responsible for ensuring the effective operation of the US/UK Service Life Assessment Committee. The role is key to enabling US/UK collaboration under the PSA and MDA.

Hybrid and flexible working can be considered for this post but will need regular workplace attendance due to security constraints. Candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before submitting an application.

Person specification

Essential Qualifications:

Degree or equivalent in Engineering or Applied Science discipline

Membership of an Engineering/Science based Professional Body (e.g. IET, IExpE, IMechE, IoP, etc.)

Essential Skills:

A demonstrable ability to apply a pragmatic and risk-based approach to complex, demanding and sensitive activities.

Proven ability to communicate complex issues to senior management and external stakeholders in an easy to understand manner.

Experience of operating holistically in a highly regulated environment, in engaging with regulators, and in maintaining strong relationships across multiple disciplines within government, industry and academia.

2 years’ experience of working in the Defence nuclear programme with knowledge of policies and procedures across all life cycle phases or related experience.

Experience of working within a role that holds technical delegation and demonstrable personal accountability.

Desirable Qualifications:

Masters or Doctoral level relevant engineering qualification

Chartered Professional (e.g. CEng, CPhys, etc.) or ability to become chartered before 2 years in post.

Desirable Skills:

Practitioner Level knowledge of Management of the Nuclear Weapon Programme (DNSR DSA 02 & JSP372).

Practitioner level understanding of the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement Polaris Sales Agreement (PSA) and PSA Technical Arrangements.

A strength and depth of character required to allow robust and competent challenge, combined with leadership qualities of self-awareness and empathy when dealing with demanding and sensitive events.

A multidisciplinary background in engineering and/or science, including but not limited to electronics, weapon systems engineering, high-hazard activities, augmented by various managerial roles in such disciplines.

Experience of working with senior and principal roles in a high-hazard industry, including leading and chairing review panels

Experience of providing advice as a ‘trusted agent’ to government bodies

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement.
