About Leicester and Leicestershire
- Leicester: The largest city in the East Midlands, home to two universities, the National Space Centre, a Premiership Rugby Union team, and a Premiership Football team.
- North of the County: Features East Midlands Airport, the largest pure freight airport in the UK, and Loughborough University, renowned for sports.
- East of the county area: Includes Melton Mowbray, known as the 'Rural Capital of Food', and Rutland, the smallest county in the UK, home to Rutland Water, the largest reservoir in England.
About the unit
Leicestershire Police’s Armed Response Unit provides the central armed response for Leicestershire, Leicester, and Rutland, offering specialised capabilities such as Tactical Rifle, Close Protection, and Mobile Armed Support to Surveillance.
- Facilities: Our base near J21 of the M1 includes a newly refurbished firearms building with a canteen and changing facilities, and an on-site shooting range for training.
- Team: A professional, highly trained, and motivated group with access to the latest equipment and exceptional trainers.
- Shift Pattern: Currently four-on, four-off 12-hour shifts.
We are looking for individuals who are
- Substantive in the rank of Constable with a Home Office force, Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) or Police Scotland (please note we cannot accept an application to transfer from an officer serving with a non-Home Office police force).
- Medically and physically fit in accordance with national standards for the role.
- Competent ARVOs trained to a minimum ARVO standard, as detailed in the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC).
- Able to pass the JRFT to level 9.4.
- Current police advanced drivers with IPP or standard response drivers with IPP, willing to complete an advanced driving course.
- Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues.
- Able to undertake all duties outlined in the National ARVO role profile.
- Able to produce a training record endorsed by their Chief Firearms Instructor.
The Recruitment Process
- Application: Provide evidence of your competency as an ARVO. Review the Competency and Values Framework document before applying. We would encourage you to read the application guidance before submitting your application.

- Firearms Assessment
- Pre-Employment Checks: Successful applicants will undergo pre-employment checks, including a medical, JRFT (Level 9.4), and Employment Vetting to MV and SC level. We will also request your force file and reference from your current force.
