The role We are seeking to recruit Council Tax Officers to deliver a professional, customer focussed and high-quality service whilst maximising revenue through the administration, collection and recovery of the Council Tax/Business Rates. Dealing directly with the public, you will be able to answer written correspondence accurately and liaise with tax payers&nbsp;on the telephone. You will predominantly be dealing with the latter stages of recovery including those at bailiff stage requiring you to discuss payment plans and liaise with enforcement agents. You will also be required to trace absconders to settle old debts where post has been returned undelivered. &nbsp; You will act as a contact person for some customers requiring you to build ongoing relationships, focussing on their needs and collating information necessary to ensure our records are updated accurately and in a timely fashion e.g. student accommodation.&nbsp; Your attendance at the Local Magistrates’ Court will be required periodically, helping negotiate payment arrangements and dealing with attendees’ queries.&nbsp; Other tasks will include reviewing exemptions/discounts and administering Council Tax records to assist the Benefit service with assessing Council Tax reduction claims.&nbsp; Key Requirements <ul> <li> Practical experience of Council Tax and a good knowledge of all the relevant principles and procedures governing it </li> <li> Excellent IT and communication skills </li> <li> Ability to act professionally and communicate patiently but effectively with those in difficulty </li> <li> Experience of prioritising own workload with minimum supervision and ability to adapt to changing priorities and demands </li> </ul> Desirable <ul> <li> CIVICA system experience desirable </li> </ul> This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and will require a Basic DBS. As Head of Revenues, Benefits and Tackling Inequality, you will lead the strategic and operational delivery of Council Tax, Business Rates, corporate debt collection, and welfare benefits— which collectively serves and affects every resident and business in the borough -ensuring both efficiency and a high-quality experience for residents. You’ll champion the design and implementation of Haringey’s new Tackling Inequality model, working collaboratively across council services, external partners, and the voluntary sector. A key part of your role will be owning and driving the Council’s Ethical Debt Collection Strategy, developing innovative approaches to prevent and manage resident debt corporately, improve payment accessibility, and ensure timely access to welfare support and advice. You’ll set ambitious performance targets and lead cultural and operational transformation to deliver measurable improvements and savings. Advising elected Members and enacting policy priorities will be central to your remit. You’ll also oversee the collection of over £340 million in income and the administration of £250 million in welfare benefits annually, while leading a team of approximately 140 staff.
