Contract type: Fixed Term for 4 years
We are seeking to appoint 3Independent Members to join our Standards Committee, which plays a vital role in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct among elected and co-opted members of the Council.
As an Independent Member, you will help to ensure that Councillors uphold the principles of integrity, accountability, and transparency in public life. You will contribute to a fair and effective process for dealing with complaints about members' conduct and help shape ethical governance across the Council.
About you
The Ideal Candidate Will:
- Bring a diverse perspective through professional and/or personal experience that differs from current members.
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills, clear reasoning, and the ability to make balanced judgements quickly.
- Possess independence of mind, objectivity and impartiality in decision-making.
- Reside within the district and have a commitment to public service.
- Be committed to the principles of public life and high standards of probity and integrity.
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work cooperatively in a committee setting, applying tact and diplomacy to sensitive matters.
- Be able and willing to attend meetings of the Committee and its Sub-Committees as required.
Desirable (Not Essential) Attributes:
- Experience handling adversarial or complaints-based matters, and/or working with or on committees.
- Awareness of the political process and how local government operates.
- Familiarity with meeting procedures and protocols.
Time Commitment:
- Standards Committee meetings: 2 per year (normally 6:00 PM)
- Sub-Committee meetings: As required, may be held during the day
- Full Council meetings: Attendance on a rota basis (6 per year)
