Hours per week: 21
Contract type: Fixed Term/Secondment

This position is available as a secondment opportunity for 6 months. If you are a permanent LBC employee, you must have written approval (an email will suffice) from your manager prior to applying and a copy will need to be submitted with your application. Please note: we will not be able to proceed with your application form without your manager’s permission.

We’re on the lookout for a talented Residential Property Solicitor to join our in-house legal team. In this role, you’ll be at the heart of providing a comprehensive legal service to the Council, its Executive, Committees, and Departments. You’ll offer trusted legal advice on a range of property matters and manage your own caseload of residential property transactions and issues.

Your expertise will directly contribute to the effective delivery of Council services and projects — from housing developments to land acquisitions, leases, and everything in between.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Providing sound legal advice on all aspects of residential property law to a variety of stakeholders across the Council.
  • Managing a personal caseload, including sales, purchases, leases, licenses, easements, and other land/property-related matters.
  • Drafting, negotiating, and completing legal documents and contracts.
  • Advising on legal implications of property projects and assisting with risk management.
  • Supporting colleagues across departments with legal queries related to land and property.

About you

You’ll need demonstrable experience handling a broad range of commercial and residential conveyancing transactions with minimal supervision. We’re looking for someone who is confident managing their own matters from instruction through to completion, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and professionalism throughout.

We value a solicitor who can work independently, but also understands the importance of delivering high-quality, cost-effective legal services within a public sector environment. You’ll be expected to manage your resources effectively and help ensure we’re offering a service that’s both pragmatic and client focused.

Strong communication skills are key — you should be able to convey legal advice clearly and concisely, both in writing and face-to-face, to colleagues, officers, and external stakeholders at all levels. A clear and systematic approach to problem-solving is essential, along with the ability to identify legal risks while staying aligned with the Council’s wider objectives.

You’ll need to demonstrate that you can prioritise and manage your own caseload effectively within broad strategic guidelines. A sound working knowledge of English Law is required, with a particular emphasis on Property and Conveyancing Law.

To be considered, you must be an Admitted Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEX, qualified in England, and hold (or be eligible to obtain) a current practising certificate. In addition, a minimum of 4 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) is essential for this role.
