About the job
We are looking for an experienced reviews officer to lead on Reviews requested under Part VI Housing Act 1996. You will have excellent knowledge and experience of the relevant legislation, Code of Guidance and Case Law and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
You have the choice to be predominately based at home, required to work from the office between one-two days a week.
This role is pivotal in ensuring that decisions related to housing are made with accuracy and fairness, in accordance with the PVI Housing Act 1996 and Newham's Allocation Scheme.
You will be a Senior Officer in a small team of 3 Review Officers & 1 Administrative support Officer reporting to the Senior Manager Reviews & Quality within Newham Homeless Prevention & Advice Service (HPAS). Although you will lead on PVI Reviews, there is the opportunity to undertake PVII Reviews to ensure a broadening of your knowledge and experience.
You will be expected to:
- Make decisions based on the PVI Housing Act 1996 with regard to Newham's Allocation Scheme.
- Provide written instruction to applicants on the outcome of their review, giving appropriate advice on any subsequent actions they may choose to pursue.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and policies.
- Working closely with other departments within the council to ensure a cohesive approach to housing allocations.
- Maintaining accurate records of decisions and reviews.
- Participating in training and development opportunities to stay up-to-date with changes in housing legislation.
- Take a ‘risk-based’ approach when reviewing cases, using sound judgement and a comprehensive knowledge of the relevant legislation. To represent the Council at Court (where required) on decisions made by the Council, pertaining to Housing and Homelessnes
- Ensure the service maintains high levels of good customer care and empathy throughout. We may not always be able to give people what they want, but we should always be honest and treat them with respect, in consideration of their situation.
About you
To succeed in this role, you should possess:
- A thorough understanding of the PVI Housing Act 1996 and its application to housing allocations.
- Experience in a similar role, preferably within a local government setting.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex legislation.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- The ability to manage a high volume of correspondance and reviews efficiently.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using relevant software and systems for record-keeping and communication.
