Job Introduction

At Solihull Council, we're committed to creating a well-connected, safe and sustainable borough for our residents, businesses and visitors. We're looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Engineer – Highway Management to join our dedicated Highway Services team and play a key role in shaping and improving our local highway network.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop or advance a career in highway engineering. Working within our Highway Management team, you will support the delivery of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), road safety initiatives and a range of highway improvement projects across the borough.

From undertaking site surveys and technical assessments to designing schemes, consulting with stakeholders and supporting project delivery on site, you'll gain hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle.

For candidates appointed at Band D, you'll take greater responsibility for leading more complex schemes, managing project budgets and programmes, supervising works on site and building effective relationships with contractors and partners to ensure successful delivery.

About You

We're looking for someone who is passionate about improving highways and road safety and who enjoys working collaboratively to deliver practical solutions.

You will have:

  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent including maths and English
  • Experience, or sound understanding, of working on construction, engineering or highways related projects.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Regulation Orders, an understanding of road safety schemes and how programmes of work are prioritised.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or GIS systems.
  • Strong communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.

Additional Requirements for Band D

  • A relevant BTEC or equivalent qualification in a construction-related subject.
  • A successful track record of delivering construction or engineering projects.
  • Experience of working independently, making informed decisions and delivering results with minimal supervision.
  • Strong project management, stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
