Job summary

This role is available as either a designated homeworking role/hybrid working role. Some travel may be required. Hybrid working can be based at our sites in Ryton-on-Dunsmore (CV8 3EN), Durham (DL15 8DS), Harrogate (HG1 1EP) or London (E14 4PU).

National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) & Public Protection (PP)

Would you like to join a skilled and dedicated team of professionals who are committed to reducing the prevalence of VAWG and Public Protection (PP) offences across England and Wales, as part of a wider-system approach?

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to join the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls & Public Protection (NCVPP) which provides support to forces in tackling the threat of VAWG and PP and improving our services to victims. You will also work with academics, victim groups and across Government to support our ambition and to ensure our work reflects the lived experiences of diverse communities.

​We are seeking a suitably experienced individual or Police Officer at Inspector rank or above (Sergeants eligible on promotion, subject to force support) to join a national programme as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in child protection.

Working for the College of Policing and alongside the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls and Public Protection, you will support the development of a new consistent training programme for child abuse investigations. This role will help ensure learning reflects current best practice, emerging threats and a strong victim centred trauma approach. As the operational lead, you will ensure that the learning remains grounded in frontline realities, reflects emerging threats, and supports high-quality, victim-centred investigations. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong operational experience who can bring credibility, insight, and practical knowledge into the design of learning. This is an excellent opportunity to work with national experts in areas such as child interviewing and specialist investigation and influence the development of training from an operational perspective. what is included in national learning from an operational perspective. The role offers strong professional development, providing valuable exposure, experience, insight and enhanced skills that can be shared with your own force (if seconded). The position runs until March 2027 (with potential extension). Secondees are encouraged to discuss this opportunity with their line management as part of their ongoing CPD.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • ​​Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders across policing and partner organisations, ensuring their input shapes national improvement and learning initiatives.​
  • ​​Lead and deliver evidence-based projects that address policing challenges, driving improvement, efficiency, and best practice across forces.​
  • ​​Support forces and partners through peer networks, events, and direct engagement to promote continuous improvement, organisational learning, and effective practice​.

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • ​​Experience with operational child abuse investigation ​
  • ​​Experience of working at a strategic level and making high risk decisions and giving credible advice​
  • ​​Proven experience of driving improvement within policing by working with internal and external stakeholders in positions of influence​

Anticipated interview dates: TBC

An initial sift based on the lead technical skill Recent experience with operational child abuse investigations in a policing environment with up-to-date knowledge of current investigative practice and safeguarding procedures may be held if a large number of applications are received. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to assessment/interview.

This role is available until 31 March 2027 as fixed term appointment to external candidates with recent child abuse investigation experience.

For Fixed Term Contracts:

Whilst this fixed term contract is offered on the understanding that it will only last as long as the stated contract length, there could be a possibility that it could be extended or made permanent should circumstances allow.

It is also available as a secondment opportunity to:

  • serving police officers substantive in the rank of Inspector, or those officers suitably qualified for temporary promotion in the rank of Sergeant. All applicants must have the support of their Chief Officer which must be of NPCC rank, i.e., CC, ACC or DCC and this must accompany an application.
  • Please note applicants applying from force must have approval for a secondment, without this you application will not progress beyond sift, even if you are successful.
