Hours: 37
Location: Hertfordshire - various locations
Contract Type: Permanent/Variable
Directorate: Growth & Environment

Passenger Transport provide essential, safe and supported transport for vulnerable residents who cannot travel independently. Their work ensures that people can access education, social care, healthcare and community services.

This role involves collecting people safely from their homes and transporting them to day centres or places within the community with professionalism and care. You will assist passengers with mobility and boarding, using ramps or lifts where required, and support them with dignity throughout their journey. As a caring first point of contact, you’ll naturally monitor passenger wellbeing and communicate any concerns appropriately. You will also complete essential vehicle safety checks to ensure the vehicle remains clean, safe and road‑ready, before returning passengers home at the end of their journey with the same level of care shown at pick‑up.

Essential criteria:

  • Full, valid driving licence with full D1 entitlement.
  • Experience or strong ability to work with vulnerable adults and people with disabilities, including supporting those with mobility or health needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, to liaise effectively with service users and other professionals.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work independently.
  • Awareness of safeguarding and duty of care, with the ability to observe, respond to and report concerns about passenger wellbeing.
  • Ability to carry out daily vehicle safety checks and maintain cleanliness, safety equipment and reporting of defects.
  • Basic cash‑handling skills, such as taking payments and recording transactions.
  • Physically fit with the ability to assist passengers safely, including supporting mobility and handling equipment.

Dial‑a‑Ride, you will play a key role in transporting vulnerable residents across Hertfordshire who cannot use conventional public transport. You will ensure every passenger receives excellent service, from support with boarding to safe arrival at their destination.

The role involves driving accessible minibus vehicles, following scheduled routes, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Duties include providing a safe, friendly, reliable door‑to‑door transport service for elderly and disabled residents; assisting passengers on and off the vehicle, including wheelchair users, while securing mobility equipment and seatbelts. Driving accessible vehicles to a professional standard while maintaining safety checks and legal compliance. Completing daily vehicle checks and reporting maintenance issues; collecting and depositing passenger fares; and maintaining accurate journey records while promptly reporting any incidents or hazards to the duty manager.

Essential criteria

  • A full, unrestricted D1 licence is essential and experience driving both manual and automatic vehicles.
  • A confident and safe driver with empathetic and professional approach.
  • Able to support passengers with varying mobility needs with dignity and patience.
  • Comfortable working independently and following scheduled routes.
  • Reliable, customer focused and committed to helping residents in the community.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work independently to assigned shifts and timings.
  • Willingness to undertake mandatory training, including moving & handling, disability awareness and first aid.
