Public Affairs Officer (Policy)

remoteOn-Site
ExpiresExpires: 14/08/2026
Policy
£42,632 - £47,369 per year

    Summary

    What you'll do

As our Public Affairs Officer (Policy), you will play a pivotal role in shaping Notting Hill Genesis' voice on housing policy, regulation and legislation.

Working within our Corporate Affairs function and reporting to the Head of External Affairs, you will lead the development of NHG's policy positions and consultation responses, helping to influence the regulatory and policy environment in which we operate. Your work will directly support our ability to deliver better outcomes for residents, strengthen our reputation and increase our influence across the housing sector.

You will work closely with colleagues across the business, particularly within Resident Engagement, Regulatory, Operations and Corporate Affairs teams, ensuring policy positions are evidence-based, resident-informed and aligned to NHG's strategic priorities.

This is an exciting opportunity for a policy, public affairs or regulatory professional who enjoys analysing complex issues, influencing decision-making and helping organisations navigate political and regulatory change.

    How you'll do it

    • Lead the development of NHG's policy positions, ensuring they reflect business priorities, resident needs and stakeholder expectations.
    • Monitor and assess developments across housing policy, regulation, legislation and the wider political environment.
    • Identify, track and prioritise relevant consultations from government departments, regulators, industry bodies and sector organisations.
    • Coordinate consultation responses across the organisation, bringing together subject matter experts and key stakeholders.
    • Draft high-quality consultation responses, policy papers, briefing notes and Board-level reports.
    • Prepare concise summaries of complex policy proposals and provide clear recommendations for decision-makers.
    • Provide political and policy insight to senior leaders, helping inform strategic planning and organisational decision-making.
    • Work closely with resident engagement colleagues to ensure resident perspectives help shape NHG's responses where appropriate.
    • Produce plain English communications and consultation summaries that make complex topics accessible to residents and colleagues.
    • Deliver internal briefings and awareness sessions, helping teams understand upcoming policy and regulatory changes.
    • Track consultation outcomes, legislative developments and regulatory changes, supporting business readiness and implementation planning.
    • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, sector bodies, government organisations and regulatory partners.

    The ideal candidate

We believe great service starts with great people, and we are committed to recruiting and developing passionate, enthusiastic and talented individuals who can add value to our thriving organisation.

    Essential

    • Relevant experience gained in a public affairs, policy, regulatory, government affairs or stakeholder engagement role.
    • Experience gained within an in-house team, agency, parliament, the civil service, housing sector or another regulated environment.
    • Strong understanding of the social housing regulatory environment, including the Regulator of Social Housing, Housing Ombudsman and Building Safety Regulator.
    • Demonstrable experience coordinating consultation responses or developing policy positions involving multiple stakeholders.
    • Excellent policy analysis, critical thinking and drafting skills, with the ability to interpret complex proposals and develop clear organisational positions.
    • Experience producing high-quality submissions, briefing papers, reports or Board-level papers.
    • Strong stakeholder management skills and experience building effective relationships across a wide range of audiences.
    • Experience translating technical, regulatory or policy information into accessible and engaging content.
    • Experience navigating governance processes, coordinating approvals and maintaining clear audit trails and records.
    • An organised and proactive approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work to demanding deadlines.
    • Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills.
    • The ability to identify risks, analyse implications and support informed decision-making.

    Desirable

    • Experience within a housing association, local authority, regulator or other highly regulated sector.
    • Knowledge of government consultation processes and legislative development.
    • Experience working with resident groups or customers to inform policy development.
    • Understanding of sector bodies such as the National Housing Federation or G15.
    • Experience briefing senior executives, Boards or governance committees.
