Salary - £52,413 to £56,730 (Grade 8)

Location – Hybrid working and various locations in the city.

The Disabilities and Mental Health Keeping in Touch (KIT) Team.

Our Disabilities and Mental Health Keeping in Touch Team works with adults aged 18 and over, where one or more of the following applies, this is their primary presenting need, and there is an appearance of care and support needs:

  • Has a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of learning disability and / or autism
  • Has a physical disability which is considered to be long term / lifelong
  • Has an acquired brain injury
  • Has a sensory impairment
  • Their primary need for care and support arises from mental health difficulties

We also support individuals with the above who are:

  • At risk of being, or who have been, involved with the criminal justice system.
  • Receiving Mental Health Services delivered by the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, or other local Trust.
  • Referred from acute psychiatric and forensic settings.
  • Entitled to S117 aftercare eligibility.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Team Manager to join our Disabilities and Mental Health KIT Team within Adult Social Care. This is a fantastic opportunity to provide leadership and operational management support to a dedicated team delivering high-quality, person-centred social work for adults, carers and families.

As an Assistant Team Manager, you will:

  • Ensure Keeping in Touch conversations are prioritised and of a high quality.
  • Promote a positive, high performing and dynamic team culture.
  • Effectively manage competing demands within a fast-paced environment.
  • Lead or contribute to projects aimed at improving review processes and outcomes.
  • Manage workflow, demand, and risk in line with the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2015, wider legal frameworks and our internal Waiting Well Policy.
  • Champion strengths-based, person-centred practice and ensure safeguarding interventions are timely and effective.
  • Provide direct line management, supervision, and coaching to team members.
  • Contribute to quality assurance, performance monitoring, and service development.
  • Work collaboratively with partners across health, education, housing, and voluntary sectors to achieve the best outcomes for adults, carers and their families.

What We’re Looking For

Proven experience in complex social work with adults with Disabilities and Mental Health needs, their families and carers, including safeguarding adults and systemic interventions.

Strong management and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff.

Project management skills along with experience in quality assurance activity.

Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation including the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Human Rights Act 1998.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

You will:

Be a Social Work England registered Social Worker with significant post-qualification experience.

  • Have completed the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) or an equivalent post qualifying pathway.
  • Be a Practice Educator, Best Interests Assessor or Approved Mental Health Professional.
  • Have a vision for your own development.

The annual pay increases for 2026/27 for NJC Local Government Employees are currently being negotiated and, once agreed, will be effective from 1 April 2026.

Our working arrangements

All council roles are allocated to either a fixed, field or flexible work style. Some roles are agile which enable and empower employees to maximise their performance and productivity, whilst maintaining a healthy work life balance. Roles with a fixed workstyle work in a fixed permanent council location. Roles with a field workstyle are usually allocated where employees are required to be out working in the community with a minimum requirement for 'touch down' space at any council location.
