South London Coroner’s Court – Resource Officer

Location: South London Coroner’s Court, Davis House, Robert Street, Croydon, CR0 1QQ. This role is court-based and there are no opportunities for home working.

Hours per week: 36 per week, though applications for job-sharing and part-time working are encouraged.

About South London Coroner’s Court

Coroners investigate certain deaths in their jurisdiction that are deemed to be unnatural, violent, or where the cause is unknown. The South London Coroner’s Court serves the four London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon and Sutton, and Croydon Council is the lead authority responsible for providing resources and staffing to support the Coroner and the effective running of the Court.

About the role

Could you help provide a compassionate and professional service to bereaved families while supporting the judicial work of the Coroner's Court? We are seeking a dedicated Coroner's Officer to join our busy and supportive team at the South London Coroner's Court.

This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. As a Resource Officer, you will provide high-quality administrative, court and front-of-house support to the Senior Coroner, Assistant Coroners and Coroner's Officers.

The role includes coordinating hearings and inquests, preparing court documentation, maintaining accurate case records, liaising with a wide range of partner agencies and supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of the Court. You will also assist with financial administration, including raising purchase orders, and work collaboratively with colleagues to respond to changing priorities and operational demands.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, has exceptional organisational skills and can deliver a sensitive, professional service during some of the most difficult times in people's lives.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work accurately under pressure.
  • Outstanding customer service and communication skills, with the confidence to deal sensitively and professionally with bereaved families and members of the public.
  • Strong IT skills and experience of maintaining accurate electronic records and producing high-quality correspondence.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and a wide range of partner organisations, including the Metropolitan Police, legal professionals, medical practitioners and funeral directors.
  • Good judgement, initiative and the ability to know when to resolve issues independently and when to escalate matters appropriately.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm, compassionate and professional when dealing with distressing and sensitive situations.
  • A flexible approach, with a willingness to support colleagues and contribute to the wider work of a small, busy team, including the assistance of ushering in court when required.

If you would like to have an informal discussion about the role, please email jane.slevin@croydon.gov.uk to arrange a call.
