Job description

Position: British Sign Language Tutor

Salary: :SO1, Spinal Point 23 to be pro rata

Hours of work: Part Time 19.5 hours per week, Term Time Only (40 weeks pa)-

8.30am – 3.30pm, 3 days per week. ½hr lunchbreak

Contract Term: Permanent

Professional Learning Days: 5 Inset days as negotiated by Blanche Nevile School

Closing Date: Friday 28th August 2026

Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Children, North London

Blanche Nevile School is a well-known and highly regarded School for Deaf students. Its history dates back to 1895 when it first opened.

We are an exciting, innovative and successful provision for deaf children aged 3 – 16. The Secondary school is co-located with Fortismere School and the Primary school is co-located with Highgate Primary.

The post is currently for working for both sites

Primary works in partnership with Highgate School and Secondary works in partnership with Fortismere School. We offer ‘The Best of Both Worlds’; British Sign Language and English, small class specialist teaching and high-quality inclusion. We have a skilled team of deaf and hearing staff with a commitment to a child centred sign bilingual approach.

We are looking for an experienced BSL and Deaf Studies Tutor to plan, deliver and assess a high-quality British Sign Language curriculum up to Level 4 or higher for Deaf and hearing pupils, parents and staff alongside delivering Deaf Studies lessons for learners in line with the Deaf Studies Curriculum The successful candidate will:

  • Have excellent planning, organisation and adaptive teaching skill
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with deaf and hearing learners, families and professionals
  • Have a qualification to teach Signature Level 1 to 4, or higher
  • Have energy and enthusiasm and a commitment to work as part of a team
  • Availability to work up to 6.00pm on some evenings
  • Have experience of teaching and formally assessing BSL across a range of levels and age groups
  • Work collaboratively as part of a supportive team of deaf and hearing staff
  • Have an understanding of the language and communication needs of deaf children and young people
  • Be familiar with and practised at using formal assessments
  • Be familiar with DCAL assessment
