Job summary

HMICFRS independently assesses the effectiveness and efficiency of police forces and fire and rescue services – in the public interest. We promote improvements in policing and fire and rescue services to make everyone safer.

We are independent of the Government, police and fire and rescue services. We ask the questions that we believe the public wish to have answered and produce major reports that shine a light on issues at the very heart of policing and fire and rescue services.

Job description

Inspection officers are essential to the conduct of HMICFRS’ inspection programmes. They are responsible for supporting inspections by ensuring that thorough preparation and detailed fieldwork and analysis is undertaken to the highest standards.

Responsibilities

  • Undertaking inspection activity, including audit reviews, interviews, and reality testing.
  • Supporting inspections – including planning and subsequent report writing, and follow-up activity.
  • Collaborating with partner inspectorates to design the most complete inspection in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to promote HMICFRS objectives and purpose.
  • Providing feedback to police forces during inspections to support continuous improvement.
  • Line management responsibilities for staff members, ensuring all aspects of HR management of personnel is fulfilled including monthly check-ins, annual development reviews and performance management.
  • Responsibility for developing personal and team knowledge re the subject matter of any given inspection.
  • Acting as an ambassador for HMICFRS ensuring the highest standards of professional conduct are always demonstrated.

Due to business requirements, this role is available for full-time hours only. The minimum working hours are 37 hours per week. Specific hours and working days will be agreed on appointment. These roles are not suitable for part-time working or job sharing.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • A detailed understanding of policing and the challenges facing the service in relation to police custody, supported by experience of working in a police custody or other detention setting role.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret evidence, draw clear conclusions, and prepare structured papers and reports. Evidence of delivering to expected timescales and standards whilst working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, together with proficiency in office-based computer systems and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team while promoting high professional and performance standards.

Desirable Criteria

  • A sound understanding of the workings between Criminal Justice agencies.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with senior criminal justice stakeholders and partner agencies to achieve shared goals and targets.
