Apprentice Trainee Assistant Project Management Engineer

£20,007 - £26,168 per year

What will you be doing?

Highways & Transportation / Major Capital Programme Team

Maidstone/Hybrid Working

72 Month Contract or earlier if completed Apprenticeship Standard

Launch your career in Engineering While You Learn

Are you ready to start your career in civil engineering and make a real impact on Kent’s infrastructure? Kent County Council is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Major Capital Programme Team (MCPT) as an Apprentice Trainee Assistant Project Management Engineer.

This role combines on-the-job experience with a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, giving you the chance to earn while you learn and work towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status—and ultimately Chartered membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

About the Role

Working alongside experienced professionals and reporting to a Senior Programme Delivery Manager, you’ll support the delivery of major highway infrastructure schemes (valued at £1m+), helping to shape the future of Kent’s transport network.

As your apprenticeship progresses, you will gain hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle:

• Feasibility and planning

• Design and consultation

• Construction delivery

• Post-construction review

What You’ll Be Doing

With guidance and support, you will:

• Assist in delivering major highway projects from concept to completion

• Support engineering design decisions using data analysis and modelling tools

• Review designs from external consultants to ensure quality and compliance

• Help identify, assess and manage project risks

• Work with a range of stakeholders, providing excellent customer service

• Ensure projects meet Health & Safety and regulatory requirements

• Apply academic learning directly to real-world engineering challenges

• Complete your apprenticeship modules, assessments and end-point assessment

About You

You must have one of the following:

• A-Levels (BBC), including Mathematics (science preferred)

• T-Level in Construction (Merit or above)

• BTEC Level 3 in Engineering

• Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship

Plus:

• 5 GCSEs (Grade 4/C or above), including Maths and English

We’re looking for someone who is:

• Passionate about civil engineering and infrastructure

• Keen to learn and develop professionally

• A strong communicator with good organisational skills

• Able to work both independently and as part of a team

• Analytical, with attention to detail and problem-solving skills

• Confident using IT (including Microsoft Office)

• Interested in highways, project management, or local government

You will also need to reside in the UK, the British Overseas Territories, or Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) continuously for at least three years prior to the start of the apprenticeship programme. This is to ensure Kent County Council is compliant with the apprenticeship funding rules . These are the rules employers must follow to get funding for apprenticeship training in England.

Why Join Kent County Council?

• Earn while you learn – fully funded degree apprenticeship

• A chance to gain real experience on large-scale infrastructure projects

• We offer a structured career pathway towards IEng and Chartered status

• We offer flexible hybrid working

• Be part of a team shaping the future of Kent

Join a forward-thinking, member-led council committed to delivering better outcomes for residents, communities, and businesses across Kent.

If you’re motivated, ambitious, and keen to start your engineering journey, we’d love to hear from you.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.

Closing date for applications is Friday 17th July, with interviews being held in Maidstone on Wednesday 12th August.
