The Role

We’re recruiting for Data Management Managers here at Justice Digital, Data and Science to be part of our warm and collaborative Data Management team.

There are several roles available, and the final allocation across the Data Management teams will depend on the priority areas, but all the roles sit where data plays a vital role in protecting the public and enabling fair, evidence‑based decisions.

As SEO Data Management Manager, you will help shape how data is looked after, understood and used. You will work closely with policy, digital, analytical and operational colleagues to improve data quality, clarify ownership, ensure metadata and master data management frameworks are implement and support better use of data across services.

This is a collaborative role, suited to someone who enjoys working with others to solve problems, build confidence in data, and turn complex requirements into practical, workable approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver data management activity across a key service area in MoJ, balancing day‑to‑day priorities with longer‑term improvement.
  • Work closely with operational, policy, digital and analytical colleagues to embed effective, proportionate data management into everyday ways of working.
  • Improve the quality, consistency and trustworthiness of data by supporting clear standards, guidance and assurance approaches.
  • Help identify and manage critical data assets, ensuring ownership and accountability are clear and understood.
  • Support the development and use of data management products such as data catalogues, metadata and master data frameworks, definitions and data quality approaches, adapting them to operational needs.
  • Incorporate data governance and risk management into routine processes, escalating issues where appropriate.
  • Act as an advocate for good data management and data literacy, building capability and confidence across teams.
  • Support senior colleagues in shaping priorities and planning future data management activity across your service portfolio.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience of working in data management or a closely related area, within a large and complex organisation.
  • A practical understanding of data management concepts such as data quality, data ownership, metadata, master data, governance and lifecycle management, and how these apply in real world settings.
  • Experience working with data and data systems, and confidence engaging with technical and non technical colleagues about data issues.
  • The ability to adapt your approach in response to changing priorities, emerging risks or new information, while keeping sight of overall goals.
  • Clear and inclusive communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas in plain English.

Willingness to be assessed against the requirements for BPSS clearance.

Salary Information**

Base salary for this role is from£42,914 - £46,182 (National) or £49,325 - £53,081 (London)

  • New entrants to the Civil Service joining the MoJ are expected to start at the minimum of the pay band.
  • Existing Civil Servants moving on a level transfer will retain their current base salary or move to the minimum of the pay band for the role, whichever is higher.
  • Existing Civil Servants who are promoted will either move to the bottom of the new grade’s pay band or receive a 10% uplift, whichever provides the greater increase.

In Justice Digital, Data and Science, we recruit using a combination of the Government Digital and Data Profession CapabilityandSuccess Profiles Frameworks. We shall assess a combination of your Experience, Technical skills and Behaviours during the assessment process.

Stage 1 - Application and sift:

Stage 2 - Interviews:

Successful candidates who meet the required standard will then be invited to a panel interview held via Microsoft Teams. At interview stage, you will be assessed against the following Success Profile elements - Experience, Technical and the following Behaviours:

As part of your interview, you will be asked to deliver a 5 minute presentation that assesses your experience. Further details will be provided if successful at sift.

Appointments are made strictly in merit order. In the event that two or more candidates receive identical interview scores, the Delivering at Pace behaviour will be applied as the primary lead criterion to determine the final merit order.

Selection Process
