Job Description

Discover yourself in Lewisham where what you do makes a difference to our vibrant and culturally diverse communities!

We have a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and are proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, for our work in championing the rights of refugees and migrants.

Join the London Borough of Lewisham as a Labourer Operative!

Are you looking to make a difference in your local community while developing your skills in building maintenance and repairs? We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Labourer Operative to support our responsive and planned maintenance services across social housing properties. Working as part of our Repairs team, you will assist skilled tradespeople, carry out minor repairs, and help ensure our properties are safe, clean and ready for residents. If you have experience in a similar role, strong teamwork and communication skills, and a commitment to excellent customer service, we would love to hear from you.

What’s the role?

To support the delivery of responsive and planned maintenance services across social housing properties. The Labourer will assist tradespeople, carry out basic repairs, and ensure properties and work areas are clean, safe, and ready for occupation or further works.

What’s in it for you?

Excellent training and development opportunities, plus a range of benefits including:

  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Local Government Pension scheme
  • Flexible working and family friendly policies
  • Season ticket and bicycle loans
  • A range of staff discounts including local subsidised gym memberships
  • Supportive staff networks

What we’re looking for

You will have a basic knowledge of building maintenance and repairs, with experience in a labouring, maintenance, or similar role. You will be able to work effectively as part of a team, follow instructions, and communicate confidently with colleagues and residents. You will demonstrate a strong commitment to health and safety and hold a full UK driving licence. Ideally, you will have a relevant qualification, be working towards one, or possess equivalent experience within the building trades. Above all, you will be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in everything you do.

Location

This role is primarily based in Laurence House, Catford, London, SE6 4RU and across housing properties and council sites within the London Borough of Lewisham. On occasion, you may be required to work at locations outside the borough to meet service needs and work evenings and weekends.

Special conditions

  • City and Guilds and/or NVQ qualification (or working towards one), or equivalent experience in building maintenance or the building trades
  • You will have a good standard of literacy and numeracy and be able to complete basic documentation and records accurately.
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.
  • A satisfactory DBS disclosure will be required.
  • You will demonstrate a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and be willing to undertake training and adapt to changing service needs.
