Museum Registrar

Museum Registrar

Job Introduction

About Us

Oxfordshire County Council are seeking to appoint a Museum Registrar at the Oxfordshire Museum Service on a permanent basis.
Oxfordshire Museum Service cares for one of the county’s most significant archaeology and social history collections, with approximately 112,000 objects spanning from the Palaeolithic Era through to contemporary collecting. We operate across four sites: the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock, the Museum Resource Centre in Standlake, Swalcliffe Barn near Banbury, and the Bishop’s Palace in Witney.

As a service, we are committed to preserving and sharing Oxfordshire’s heritage through collections care, exhibitions, learning and community engagement. The collection continues to grow and evolve through acquisitions, loans and partnerships, while an active programme of loans out extends access to our collections beyond our own sites. Over the coming years, the Museum Service will also play an important role in preparing collections, documentation and systems to support the future opportunities and challenges presented by Local Government Reorganisation.

About the Role

Join Oxfordshire Museum Service as our Museum Registrar and help ensure the effective management, documentation and accessibility of the county's museum collections. You will be responsible for maintaining collections records and documentation, administering loans, acquisitions and disposals, supporting audits and accreditation, and helping to deliver collections care, exhibitions and public access initiatives across the service.

The Museum Registrar helps care for the whole collection, reporting directly to the Curator of Social History and working closely with Collections team colleagues in both Social History and Archaeology, passionate volunteers, external partners and colleagues across the wider service. Together, you will help ensure Oxfordshire’s heritage collections are well cared for, well documented and accessible for current and future generations

About you

You will have experience of museum collections documentation, including acquisitions, disposals and loans, and be confident using MODES or a similar collections management system. With a good understanding of Spectrum standards and Museum Accreditation, you will be able to maintain accurate collections records and support the effective management of museum collections.

You will bring strong organisational and communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with colleagues, volunteers, lenders, borrowers and donors. You will also recognise the important role that good documentation plays in collections care and public access, and be keen to support opportunities for people to discover and engage with Oxfordshire’s museum collections through both digital and in-person activities.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact - Jemma Davey, Museum Service Manager, Jemma.Davey@oxfordshire.gov.uk
