<h4>Job summary</h4><p><strong>Funding notes</strong></p><p>The studentship is fully funded for 4 years but is only available for students eligible for home UK fees. This project is in collaboration with the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London. The student will also be required to complete two 3-month rotations in the wider MHRA within their first year allowing them to gain insight into public health research.</p><p>The project will be supervised by Dr Othmar Engelhardt and Dr Simon Hufton at MHRA and Prof John Tregoning at Imperial College London. The studentship is anticipated to commence on 1st October 2026. The studentship will offer a stipend, currently £22,780 per year and reviewed annually. </p><h4>Job description</h4><p><strong>About the Project</strong></p><p>Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) causes significant disease burden, particularly in the very young and the very old. Recently there has been progress in preventing this virus, with the licensing of three vaccines and two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs Nirsevimab (Beyfortus) and Clesrovimab (MK-1654)). The success or failure of both antibodies and vaccines for RSV depends upon virus evolution and escape; this will particularly impact monoclonal antibodies. Another concern is that RSV immunisation may cause replacement of its ecological niche by the related winter virus human metapneumovirus (hMPV), itself a high priority amongst vaccine developers. An estimated 473,000 hMPV-associated hospitalisations occur globally, of which 185,000 were in high-income countries.</p><p>Hypothesis: Nanobodies that are cross-neutralising for RSV and hMPV can be generated.</p><p>The student will focus on the following topics:</p><ul><li>Generation of mRNA and proteins for pre-F from RSV and hMPV for immunisation. <ul><li>Based on the design of stabilised RSV pre-fusion F protein constructs and matching RNA vaccines developed by the Tregoning lab, the student will generate matching hMPV proteins and constructs.</li></ul></li><li>Immunisation of alpacas to recover nanobodies. <ul><li>Nanobody libraries will be generated from the immunised alpacas and appropriate selection strategies will be developed and employed to isolate cross-reactive nanobodies binding F protein of RSV and hMPV.</li></ul></li><li>Characterisation of nanobodies. <ul><li>Isolated nanobodies will be expressed in bacteria and characterised for binding (e.g., by ELISA or surface plasmon resonance). Their ability to neutralise RSV and hMPV will be assessed.</li></ul></li><li>Identification of escape mutants. <ul><li>Using classical virology techniques, RSV and hMPV viruses will be selected that escape neutralisation by the lead nanobodies. Escape mutants will be sequenced, thereby providing information about the epitopes recognised by the nanobodies.</li><li>The student will also model, using computational approaches, the identified amino acid changes on the respective F proteins, enhancing our knowledge about mutational tolerance of the F protein and the nanobody-binding interface.</li></ul></li><li>Testing of nanobodies in vivo as potential therapeutic agents. <ul><li>Using well established RSV challenge models, the student will explore protection against infection. The student will be required to complete two 3-month rotations in the wider Agency, within their first year allowing them to gain unique insight into public health research.</p><p>The project will be supervised by Dr Deepa Rajagopal and Dr. Sandrine Vessillier at MHRA and Professor Vijay Chudasama at UCL. The studentship is anticipated to commence 1st October 2026. The studentship will offer a yearly stipend, currently £22,780 and reviewed annually.</p><h4>Job description</h4><p><strong>About the Project</strong></p><p>Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has shown great success in treating relapsed or refractory blood cancers, with several clinically approved treatments. However, current CAR-T therapies are associated with toxicological challenges, additionally involve complex, costly GMP manufacturing processes, and are associated with potential risks of introduction of viral components. The ErbB family of receptors, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), ErbB2, ErbB3, and ErbB4, play a crucial role in the development and progression of various cancers. Building up on the global success of the Covid-19 mRNA vaccine, this multi-disciplinary project will investigate mRNA-based in vivo CAR T-cell generation as a potential new approach for targeting T-cells for generation of efficient anti-tumour responses to gain an understanding of the immunotoxicological profile. The proposed project aims to leverage the mRNA platform to assess feasibility of in vivo reprogramming of circulating T-cells with a second- generation, pan ErbB-specific CAR (bearing the promiscuous ErbB ligand) for cancer immunotherapy, evaluating both anti-tumour efficacy and immunotoxicity. The in vivo approach will additionally employ targeting antibodies (Abs) to functionalise the mRNA lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to facilitate uptake and targeted mRNA expression for in vivo therapeutic CAR T-cell induction. Recent studies indicate that the in vivo targeting approach produced CAR-T cells with similar anti-tumour activity to conventional CAR-T-cells and potential therapeutic benefit has been observed in disease conditions such as inflammatory cardiac fibrosis.</p><p>The successful candidate will acquire knowledge, expertise with training in a diverse range of laboratory techniques including LNP manufacture and functionalisation for selective targeting; in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo assays for therapeutic efficacy; and toxicological evaluation incorporating cellular, molecular biological and flowcytometry based assays. We’re looking for an experienced Principal Asset Manager to help us optimise Enfield’s diverse commercial estate and support the delivery of excellent services for our residents.<br>
You’ll play a key role in managing and maximising income from a substantial commercial portfolio (part of a wider non-housing portfolio of over 1,100 assets, including c.625 commercial properties and a commercial investment portfolio currently generating around £8m p.a.).<br>
Reporting to the Head of Estates, you’ll lead on complex commercial asset management work, provide expert professional advice, and help shape and implement our Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) and Commercial Asset Strategy.<br>

As Principal Asset Manager you will:<br>

 - Proactively manage a defined commercial asset portfolio (e.g. retail, industrial, rural or mixed-use), ensuring it is fully occupied, well-balanced and delivering optimal return.<br>
 - Lead and manage a wide range of commercial property transactions, including lettings, lease renewals, rent reviews, service charges, landlord consents, dilapidations, breaches of covenant and income/debt management.<br>
 - Identify opportunities to increase income, reduce voids and manage risk, ensuring full market rent is achieved wherever appropriate.<br>
 - Support and challenge colleagues to develop innovative approaches to the use and optimisation of assets, including re-purposing assets and creating new income streams.<br>

Acting as an independent champion, the AFC provides a direct route for serving personnel and their families to raise concerns about welfare issues that may impact on their service lives and ability to serve.</p><p>The Commissioner subsumes the roles and responsibilities of the Service Complaints Ombudsman for the Armed Forces (SCOAF), providing independent and impartial oversight of the Service Complaints system. They have the power to help Service personnel access the Service Complaints system, review aspects of the handling of individual Service Complaints, and report on the efficiency, effectiveness, and fairness of the system as a whole.</p><p>They also have the discretion to conduct individual and thematic investigations into specific and broader welfare issues facing Service personnel and their families.
