Job summary

We are currently looking for a Business Affairs Manager (Laboratories) to join our Health & Safety and Quality Assurance Function within the Science, Research and Innovation group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

Who are we?

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.

The role sits in the Science and Research (S&R) arm of the Scientific Research and Innovation Group. Science & Research delivers laboratory-based regulatory science with public health impact and world-leading research innovation, through the MHRA’s Science Campus. Science & Research comprises four Functions: Research and Development (R&D), Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety (HSQA).

The activities of the Health and Safety and Quality Assurance Function ensure that the MHRA is operating within controlled H&S, Quality and Governance frameworks, ensuring compliance and good governance for its activities. The team provides guidance and advice for staff, supporting the scientific staff in areas of governance and alignment of the scientific work with Agency guidelines, policies, and strategies.

Job description

What’s the role?

This is an exciting opportunity to support the Deputy Director of Health and Safety and Quality Assurance, in providing central business support for the scientific Functions within the Science and Research Group at MHRA, providing expert guidance and advice to staff on areas of governance and scientific strategy. The role will support the Senior Management Team in monitoring business planning for the function and will feed outputs into assurance and risk processes. The role will play a key part in business continuity requirements for the Science and Research activities carried out at the Science Campus and ensuring continued resilience of scientific outputs.

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee the co-ordinated update of Group policies and procedures and identify where management changes are required - working with functions to design and implement new standards, systems and procedures - and ensure these are communicated effectively to stakeholders.
  • Work with the Science and Research Senior Leadership Team and their functions to ensure successful delivery of the Group’s strategic and operational priorities, and support the reporting and escalation where delivery is at risk.
  • Support the Deputy Director of HSQA to manage Business Continuity processes for Science and Research, working with other stakeholders on the wider site plans, and ensuring S&R Function plans are in place and maintained to be up to date.
  • Manage the governance and secretariat arrangements for the Senior Leadership Team and key internal / external meetings, ensuring accurate record-keeping and tracking of actions to completion.

Our successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience: Excellent presentation and communication/influencing skills with the ability to concisely communicate information to different audiences to enable successful delivery through others. Evidence of this from a scientific perspective would be an advantage.
  • Seeing the Bigger Picture: Ensuring plans and activities reflect wider strategic priorities and are communicated effectively with senior leaders to influence future strategies and bringing together views, perspectives and diverse needs of stakeholders to gain a broader understanding of the issues surrounding policies and activities.
  • Communicating and Influencing: Communicating with others in a clear, honest and enthusiastic way, able to explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand, monitoring the effectiveness of communications and taking action to improve where necessary.
  • Technical: Degree or equivalent qualification / experience. (Science or Life Science would be an advantage)
