We have a fantastic opportunity to work in our high performing Communications, Marketing and Engagement team.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in a previous communications role within the public sector or the third sector (charities and non-profit organisations).

As a Communications Officer (Digital Media), you will have exceptional communication skills and an eye for detail, with the ability to write press releases and copy for our borough magazine, social media channels, weekly staff e-newsletter and community website, One Welwyn Hatfield.

You will be responsible for producing high-quality content across the Council’s digital channels to engage with our community. You will have a passion for digital media with excellent knowledge of different digital platforms and be responsible for driving engagement with the skills to create scroll-stopping content.

Developing excellent working relationships with colleagues and teams from across the council will be key to ensuring their key messages are being communicated effectively to residents and to raise the council’s profile. From developing social media campaigns to writing press releases, no day will be the same and the post holder will be required to be flexible and think creatively to bring a fresh approach to our communications.

We are looking for a candidate who can be flexible, manage conflicting priorities and work well under pressure when needed. In return, you will be supported to develop and thrive in this role, whilst taking opportunity of the many benefits we have to offer.

If this sounds like the perfect role for you, why not apply! For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Michael Sherry, Service Manager (Communications, Marketing and Engagement) atm.sherry@welhat.gov.uk

You will be working in the heart of Welwyn Garden City in our vibrant office. We offer flexible working to achieve a good work life balance, generous annual leave, discount to the council owned leisure facilities and much more. To see our full list of employee benefits visitMy Rewards – Careers

The role is hybrid with the expectation of attending the office at least one day per week, and to attend meetings, training and visits. This will be more frequent during the induction period.

The role will require some work to be undertaken outside of normal working hours.

Closing date for applications is 29 November 2026
Remote assessments will be held on 3 December 2026

We are changing:
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). If you are employed by WHBC on 1 April 2028, it is expected that the majority of roles will transfer to the newly-created unitary councils on existing terms and conditions under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings – Protection of Employment) principles.

LGR is one of the biggest changes in local government we will face in a generation. It will reshape how we work and how services are organised and gives us a real opportunity to build something better.
