    About Us

Camden is changing on the inside to make life better for everyone. Our residents and communities are at the heart of everything we do. We’re home to the most important conversations happening today and we’re making radical social change a reality, so that nobody gets left behind. Here’s where you can help decide a better future for us all.

    The Role

We are looking for a candidate to fit our Deputy Team Leader role working within our Development Management team. This will be for a 1-year fixed term basis to provide cover for the substantive post holder who is on maternity leave although there is the possibility of extension as service needs require. You will contribute to our vibrant community's future by ensuring a responsive, high-performing, and top tier Development Management service. We support flexible working hours and conditions which will entail occasional meetings and site visits outside of normal office hours according to the needs of the service.

This role provides an opportunity for an experienced planning professional to develop their people management skills while leading on pivotal planning applications that drive positive outcomes for our borough and its communities. Supporting our Area Team Managers you will take on line management responsibility for a number of planners in the team.

You will manage your own caseload mainly comprising a small number of large scale or high profile major schemes on which you will lead on the negotiations to secure strategic benefits for Camden.

Your strategic approach will strengthen relationships across the council and externally, fostering collaboration. As the go-to expert on planning advice, processes, legislation, and Camden's policies, you'll empower confident decision-making. Your commitment ensures a responsive, high-performing Development Management Service that meets community needs.

    About You

We are looking for someone enthusiastic, organised and personable with strong communication and negotiation skills. You should care about residents and know how local government works in a diverse urban setting. The ideal candidate will show an understanding for how politics affects local development and the implications of this on people and places. Being able to find smart solutions to complex problems and building good relationships within and outside the council is key for this role.

You need to be good at managing projects, talking to people, and seeing the big picture. Your experience in handling complex planning applications is crucial. Being a good leader and mentor is a must.

A good understanding of the London planning system is expected as well as keeping up to date with the latest changes in policy and planning law. A recognised RTPI qualification is essential and having experience gained at an appropriate level working within a local authority is an advantage.
