Are you a strategic communicator with a passion for public service? Do you excel at managing complex issues and leading teams to deliver impactful campaigns? If so, we want you to join us as our new Head of Communications.

About the Role

As the Head of Communications, you will lead the council’s external and internal communications strategy across all platforms—digital, print, and media. You’ll be the driving force behind our external profile, brand management, and campaign planning, ensuring our messaging is clear, consistent, and aligned with our corporate objectives.

You’ll work closely with the senior leadership team and neighbouring Kent authorities, playing a pivotal role in communications around Local Government Reorganisation and the creation of unitary authorities. As editor-in-chief for our website, you’ll shape the customer experience and champion digital engagement.

Your expertise will be crucial in managing the council’s reputation, providing timely responses to media issues, and advising senior leaders on communications strategy. You’ll also lead our response during major incidents and civil emergencies, ensuring the public receives accurate and timely information.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the Corporate Plan.
  • Manage the council’s website, social media, and media relations, ensuring a steady flow of engaging content.
  • Lead on brand management, campaign planning, and marketing for key assets such as Tonbridge Castle and events.
  • Advise the management team, cabinet, and members on communications strategy and risk management.
  • Oversee the work of Media & Communications Officers, Digital Content Editor, and Internal Communications Officer.
  • Coordinate media events, promotions, and community engagement activities.
  • Manage the communications budget and ensure compliance with council policies and health & safety regulations.
  • Provide communications leadership during emergencies and contribute to business continuity planning.

About You

You’ll bring substantial experience in a senior communications or press office role, with a proven track record in media relations, social media management, and internal communications. You’re a strategic thinker, able to influence at senior levels and deliver results under pressure.

  • Experience managing communications at a senior level, including contentious issues.
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, with the ability to tailor your style to different audiences.
  • Well-organised, IT literate, and able to prioritise effectively.
  • Enthusiastic, positive, reliable, and flexible.

Why Join Us?

This is a unique opportunity to shape the public image of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council at a time of significant change. You’ll make a real impact in the community and develop your career in a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
