The road safety statistics team manages the statistical data collection, publication and dissemination of road casualty statistics, which are among the most widely used of any of the Department for Transport’s statistical series and support one of its most high-profile policy areas with a wide range of internal and external users of the statistics.
This is an exciting time to join the team with a new road safety strategy published in 2026, and the team’s statistics used to inform high-profile policy areas and strategy commitments for example on e-scooters, rural roads and data linkage. The team also has a stretching programme of work to develop data collection, publication and dissemination pipelines using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and R.

Job description
This is a wide-ranging role which will lead the team’s analytical development projects to support the new road safety strategy, as well as continuous improvement of road casualty data and statistics including statistical and geospatial analysis. The post will also contribute to other areas of the team’s work, including data collection, publications and delivering analysis for the wide range of users of the team’s statistics.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
- Leading work to develop and exploit new data linking police recorded collision records with healthcare data, as outlined in the road safety strategy, to improve the understanding of the quality of completeness of police data, and improve understanding of road collision risk.
- Leading work to improve the geospatial data on collisions, including project management of work to develop a new classification of rural roads (a strategy commitment).
- Exploring statistical methods which could add value to the published road safety statistics, engaging with academic experts to develop a robust approach, and developing new tools to present the results to support user understanding.
- Leading work with stakeholders to improve understanding of the police recording of injury severity, by surveying data providers and acting on feedback.
- Supporting the grade 7 team leader in setting the overall strategy (as set out in the team’s published development roadmap) and engaging with stakeholders to exploit opportunities such as new datasets and data linkages.
- Supporting the wider work of the team including developing reproducible pipelines for data processing and publication, and contributing analysis to the team’s statistical publications.
- Providing general support to the team and the wide range of internal and external users of the STATS19 dataset by acting as a subject matter expert, advising on appropriate use of the data and responding to queries from policy colleagues and other analysts.
Colleagues are expected to work with a degree of flexibility, meaning responsibilities may change to support priority delivery.

Person specification
Essential Qualifications:
Candidates must either be a member of the Government Statistician Group or hold a professional statistical qualification as per the requirements for membership of the Government Statistician Group.
If you are not a current member of the Government Statistician Group and are successful in this recruitment campaign, you will be required to complete a statistical test whilst in post if you are successful. We will provide you with the support and training you need to support you with completing this test whilst in post.
Eligibility to join the Government Statistician Group can be demonstrated through a minimum of one of:
- A first- or second-class honours degree (2:2 minimum) in a numerate subject containing taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Psychology, Geography)
- Having achieved a Level 4 Data Analytics apprenticeship and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development via a logbook that has been signed off by an existing member of the GSG profession in the role of manager or mentor, covering 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government
- Having worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and being able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five)

Required Experience:
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- Collecting, processing and analysing complex data, using appropriate coding languages (such as R, SQL and/or BigQuery) and statistical techniques, following good data management practices to deliver high-quality, reproducible results (in line with Code of Practice for statistics standards).
- Working closely and communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical customers (including policy teams) to understand analytical requirements and present the results of analysis to successfully meet user needs, in written reports (such as statistical releases) and orally.
- Leading the delivery of analytical projects to challenging timescales, including forward planning to identify risks and issues, managing others and delivering quality outcomes to meet customer needs.
Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.
Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 29.6 hours (4 days) per week.
This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.
The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation. Regular attendance in the London office will be required (a minimum of once per month) for line management purposes.
