Do you have an interest in protecting the environment and public health?
Have you ever wondered how the law relating to the air that you breathe and the food you eat is enforced?
This is your opportunity to find out whilst earning money and gaining a degree level qualification.
The Environmental Health Service consists of the Environmental Protection, Housing and Food & Safety teams, which help to protect public health and ensure a fair and safe environment.
Working across Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone and Swale, we are looking for two apprentices to join our service: one based in Tunbridge Wells, and one based in Sittingbourne.
We are offering this opportunity to the right candidates who are prepared to commit to a 4-year Level 6 Environmental Health Degree course at Middlesex University, alongside taking on a case load within the teams.
We are looking for an individual with an outstanding work ethic, excellent timekeeping, and keenness to learn through a combination of study and work. Candidates should have a good level of education, to A level or equivalent, including GCSE English and Mathematics.
You can see how officers feel about working for the council and the type of work we do here.
Our first apprentice, Caitlin, is currently completing her fourth and final year:
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being an Apprentice at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, it has provided me with a great career path, involving a range of exciting, versatile and rewarding work. The efforts of Environmental Health Officers in improving lives within local communities cannot be underestimated, and I feel fortunate to have had this opportunity to achieve a degree whilst learning visually on the job. The guidance from my team has been fantastic, and I would strongly recommend this apprenticeship to anyone looking at making a difference in a highly supportive environment”.
As a Council, we have an excellent track record of training, having successfully trained students over many years who have gained permanent employment either with the council (through a competitive interview process) or in other public services or private companies. The course leader at Middlesex University described us as an exemplar employer.
If you would an informal chat about the role, please contact Nollaig Hallihan 01622 602783 or Annmarie Goodwin 01622 602878.
Shortlisted applicants will have the opportunity to have an informal TEAMs session with our current apprentice on 13th June 2025. Interviews will be held for the Swale based post on 17th June 2025 and Tunbridge Wells based post 18th June 2025.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate all essential requirements as listed in the job description and person specification.
