Casual Control Centre Operator

Casual Control Centre Operator

Community
£23,074 - £24,469 per year

Join the Front Line of Community Safety in a Role That Really Matters

About the role

Are you calm under pressure, quick to react, and motivated by work that genuinely makes a difference? Swale Borough Council is looking for sharp‑minded, reliable individuals to become Casual Control Centre Operators within our dynamic Community Safety team.

This isn’t your typical desk job. As part of our 24/7 Control Centre, you’ll be at the heart of real‑time incident monitoring, supporting emergency services, and helping keep our communities safe. If you’re looking for flexible work that’s meaningful, fast‑paced, and never the same day twice, this is your chance to step into a role with real impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Every shift is different — you’ll be monitoring live Public Space CCTV, supporting local communities across the partnership, and helping local businesses tackle crime.
  • Spotting and reporting incidents in real time, providing vital information to our commercial clients across the partnerships and the Swale, Ashford, Gravesham and Folkstone. Business Crime Reduction Partnership.
  • Keeping our Control Centre secure, ensuring only authorised personnel enter and maintaining accurate access logs.
  • Handling out‑of‑hours calls for local councils, following clear procedures to keep services running smoothly.

Why This Role Is Exciting

  • You’re a part of the action — your observations and decisions directly support community safety across Swale, Ashford, Gravesham and Folkstone.
  • Ultimate flexibility — perfect for those wanting additional hours, varied shifts, or work that fits around other commitments.
  • Work when it works for you — we’ll call on you to help cover rotating shifts, including weekends and Bank Holidays, so adaptability is key.

This is a casual contract with variable hours which can include working weekends and Bank Holidays as required, therefore we need people who are flexible and would be available to work occasional hours at short notice.

Why Swale Borough Council

Swale is a forward‑thinking, ambitious local authority in a uniquely diverse part of Kent — from coastal towns to rural landscapes, all less than an hour from Central London. We’re proud of our people‑first culture and our commitment to wellbeing.

When you join us, you’re not just taking on a job — you’re becoming part of a team that values your contribution, supports your growth, and trusts you to help keep our communities safe.

About You

To fill the requirements of the post, you need good IT and communication skills with the ability to work under pressure and independently using your initiative to deal with straight forward problems. The ability to remain calm under pressure and deal with potentially distressing incidents is essential.

A basic DBS Check and Kent Police Vetting is required for this post. You must also hold, or be prepared to achieve, a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Licence.

Training and Support

You’ll receive a structured induction and on-the-job training to help you build confidence in the role. Ongoing support will be provided by experienced colleagues and supervisors, ensuring you’re fully equipped to carry out your duties and continue developing your skills over time.

Selection Process

Following the submission of your application form, it will be reviewed by the recruiting manager. Those that are successful in this stage can expect to be invited to interview.

Swale Borough Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all employee and volunteers to share this commitment.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Debbie Valk, Partnerships Liaison Officer on 01795 417754 or debbievalk@swale.gov.uk or Sean Smith, Partnerships and Commercial Manager on seansmith@swale.gov.uk
