Education
£11,091 per year

This role has a starting salary of £11,091 per annum, based on 14.40 hours (2 days) per week across 33 weeks per year, pro-rata to £38,090. The position is term-time only, working from September to June.

This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

We are excited to be hiring an experienced and committed Deaf Instructor to join our Physical & Sensory Support (PSS) FHE16+ team, supporting Deaf young people and adults across Further and Higher Education settings in Surrey. This is a county-wide role.

Our Offer to You

  • A generous local government salary related pension
  • An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support health and wellbeing
  • Learning and development hub where you can access a wealth of resources
  • Wellbeing and lifestyle discounts including gym, travel, and shopping
  • Professional development, including opportunities to enhance BSL teaching qualifications

About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to step into a role where your experience, communication skills and professional expertise come together to make a lasting difference.

As a Deaf Instructor within our Physical & Sensory Support (PSS) FHE 16+ team, you’ll work directly with Deaf young people and adults in Further and Higher Education settings across Surrey. Your role is about more than supporting communication – it’s about unlocking access to education, building confidence, and championing Deaf identity.

Working in partnership with Teachers of the Deaf and other professionals, you’ll help learners navigate their education with greater independence and confidence. You’ll deliver tailored BSL support and act as a trusted figure in each learner’s journey.

This is a highly rewarding, people-focused role where no two days are the same. You’ll manage your own schedule across different learning environments, becoming a familiar and valued presence for the learners you support.

Your key responsibilities in the role of Deaf Instructor will include:

  • Delivering high-quality British Sign Language (BSL) tuition and communication support to Deaf students in FE and HE settings
  • Working collaboratively with Teachers of the Deaf and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure learners can fully access their education
  • Supporting the development of students’ independence, confidence and positive Deaf identity
  • Assessing learners’ BSL skills and planning structured, personalised programmes to support their progression
  • Adapting your approach to meet individual needs, enabling each learner to achieve their potential
  • Traveling across Surrey to a range of educational settings, managing your own diary and caseload effectively

Your Application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with our behaviours:

  • Fluency in British Sign Language and confidence in communicating with a wide range of audiences
  • Signature qualifications in BSL teaching (or a willingness to work towards these)
  • Substantial experience working with Deaf individuals, ideally within education or support settings
  • A strong understanding of Deaf culture and the barriers and opportunities experienced by Deaf people
  • The ability to plan, deliver and evaluate structured teaching or support programmes
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage a varied workload across multiple locations
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, alongside the ability to produce clear written reports

The role holder will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.

This is your chance to join a respected, countywide service where your work will have a direct and meaningful impact. You’ll be part of a supportive team, with the autonomy to shape your work and the opportunity to help Deaf learners thrive, achieve and feel confident in their ability.

The job advert closes at 23:59 on 27.08.2026 with interviews planned to follow.

Before submitting your application, we recommend you read the job description and our Life at Surrey Handbook to get an insight into working at Surrey.
