At Bracknell Forest Council, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality services that make a real difference to our residents, businesses and visitors. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Highway Network Inspector to join our Highway Network Management Team.

Any successful internal candidate will be offered the position as a secondment and, in line with Section 8.1 of the Secondment Policy, must consult with their manager before applying. Search ‘secondment policy’ on the intranet for more information.

At Bracknell Forest, we pride ourselves on being a council which is stable and well-managed where our employees can thrive in a supportive environment. We understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance and offer a variety of flexible working practices, including options for remote working and arrangements that allow you to work from home, dependent on the needs of the service. This role is site based with admin work from home. The postholder will be expected to attend the office as required by the manager, alongside flexible working arrangements.

About you...

As a Highway Network Inspector, you will join a busy and professional service that manages the borough’s highway network. You will help ensure street works are carried out safely and efficiently, with minimal disruption to residents, businesses and visitors. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, organised and confident working both independently and as part of a team. You will have experience in highway inspections or street works, along with knowledge of relevant legislation and strong communication skills. A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential, as regular business travel across the borough is required.

About the team…

You will join the Highway Network Management team, where you will play an important role in co-ordinating and monitoring street works across the borough. The team works together to keep the highway network running smoothly, safely and with minimal disruption. You will be supported by knowledgeable colleagues as you develop in the role and contribute to the work of the service. The Highways and Transport division offers a supportive and inclusive working environment, where teamwork, problem solving and shared learning are valued. You will work closely with colleagues across the organisation and be part of a team that reflects our shared values and the council’s ‘One Council’ approach.

Key responsibilities...

You will be responsible for:

  • investigating site enquiries through to conclusion
  • ensuring compliance with street works regulations, codes of practice and local procedures
  • inspecting work in progress and checking reinstatements
  • minimising delays and disruption to highway users
  • being the eyes and ears of the team out on the highway network

The role requires you to travel around the borough, meeting utility companies and contractor representatives and directing, arranging or negotiating remedial actions.

Our benefits...

  • 28 days annual leave increasing to 33 days after 3 years’ continuous service, with the opportunity to buy up to 10 and sell up to 5 days.
  • Hybrid working opportunities to support your wellbeing and work-life balance.
  • Paid employee volunteering scheme.
  • Local government pension scheme, with life insurance cover.
  • Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme (subject to eligibility).
  • Recognition of continuous service attained within the NHS and UKHSA when calculating some benefits. (Terms and Conditions apply)
  • Career development through internal and external training opportunities.
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption and fostering leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support your health and wellbeing
  • Inclusive and social working environment with a variety of staff networks and a sports and social club.
