The Housing and Homelessness Service is a very busy environment and faces several challenges to meet the housing needs of citizens of Coventry. The team have grown significantly during the last 12 months and this reflects the fact that Housing & Homelessness are now a key council priority.

The team are responsible for the delivery of the following service functions:

  • Provision of the statutory homeless service

  • Provision of temporary accommodation

  • Management of the housing register

  • Co-ordination of support to citizens rough sleeping

  • Commissioning of homeless services, and

  • Responsibility for housing strategy

The Council has a strategic vision that is clearly set out in both the Housing & Homelessness and the Rough Sleeping Strategies which were both approved in 2019.

By becoming part of an expanding team who are focused on preventing households from becoming homeless as well as providing tailored support and interventions when someone does become homeless this is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to some of the most vulnerable people in our city.

What is the job role?

We are recruiting for a newly created 3 year fixed term role of Intensive Support Navigator, joining the team at an exciting time for the growing Housing and Homelessness Service.

In this role, you will support individuals who are open to the Vulnerable Persons Forum and Pre-Eviction Panel, helping to stabilise their housing and prevent homelessness.

You will take a creative, solution-focused approach, confidently negotiating and engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Providing tailored support and interventions to help individuals access and sustain suitable accommodation

• Offering practical support, including support to access benefits and advice services, tenancy skills, budgeting, and establishing daily living routines.

• Supporting individuals to develop skills in managing neighbour relationships, engaging with their community, and communicating effectively with landlords and property owners

• Building strong, trusting relationships through regular contact and community-based engagement, promoting independence, choice, and wellbeing

• Working in a psychologically informed way, using reflective practice and coaching approaches to support long-term change

• Work together with partner organisations to ensure coordinated support and improved outcomes for individuals

• Maintaining accurate, up-to-date case records in line with service expectations

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a individual who understands the significant impact that complex needs and life experiences can have on people who are at risk of homelessness.

The ideal candidate will bring a positive and proactive attitude towards supporting individuals to overcome and prevent homelessness. You will be a confident communicator with strong negotiation and advocacy skills, able to support vulnerable individuals to achieve the best possible outcomes.

You will demonstrate resilience, determination, and a commitment to ensuring fair and appropriate solutions for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

A willingness to learn and develop knowledge of relevant housing and homelessness legislation.

This role requires someone who can travel across the city and respond flexibly to emerging situations. You will be confident using your initiative, forward-thinking in your approach, and focused on solutions within a fast-paced, reactive environment.
