Job summary

St Helena offers an extraordinary lifestyle and a rare professional opportunity. Beautiful and remote, the island is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK which currently receives UK government aid as it drives forward its economic and social development. A core focus of the long term strategy for the island is fostering sustainable, locally driven growth to improve lives across our close-knit community.

To support the development of the island, as well as the delivery of all the functions of a small territory’s government, we’re looking for someone to join the collegiate team within the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Job description

Working with the Legislative Commissioner and other members of Chambers, you will be part of a small drafting team ensuring that laws for St Helena, and the other islands in the territory (Ascension and Tristan da Cunha) are properly and effectively drafted. Working directly with ministers and members of the public service, you will help to pass legislation from first presentation through to commencement and will advise on changes to laws including an extensive programme of modernisation of existing laws.

A core initiative within Chambers focuses on improving the accessibility of our laws. As a key contributor to this goal, you will research, audit, and deliver tangible changes to streamline lawmaking and modernise our official legislation website.

Person specification

A UK or Commonwealth qualified lawyer with at least two years’ post-qualification experience, we would expect unequivocal compliance with Nolan Principles and with standards and rules of conduct required by your regulator. Maintaining your eligibility to hold a practising certificate, you will undertake CPD obligations, keeping records that demonstrate your continuing education and competence.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
