We are St Helens Borough Council

Located in the heart of the Northwest close to Liverpool, Manchester and Lancashire, St Helens is a modernising Council which is passionate and ambitious for the children and families we support, our communities and our workforce. As part of our transformation journey, we continue to build on our progress and put children firmly at the centre of our care. We can only do this because of our highly valued, skilled, and supported workforce.

Making a Difference as a YJS Sessional worker

Rated ‘GOOD’ by Her Majesty’s Inspection of Probation in November 23, St Helens Youth Justice Service is a small team of multi-agency professionals. We share a passion for helping and supporting children and their families and victims of youth crime, to improve their lives and make communities safer.

St Helens Youth Justice Service are proud to be able to recruit a number of sessional workers to be involved in an exciting pilot project – part of the Young Futures Prevention Partnerships (Panels). These panels are part of the Government’s Young Futures Programme, under the Safer Streets mission, aiming to prevent and reduce anti-social behaviour (ASB), knife crime, and violence against women and girls (VAWG) through earlier intervention and support

We are seeking creative, passionate and motivated child-centred sessional workers to support children aged 10-17 years. We need workers who will think out of the box, be creative, and can work in a fast-paced and intensive environment.

You will need to be adaptable to meet the needs of children, families and the service – this will include working some evenings and occasional weekends to ensure that children are supported. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of children.

The posts are 12 hour per week (4 x 3 hours or 3 x 4 hours) daytime/evening and weekend availability essential.

This exciting project has been funded until March 2029 by the Home Office.

Applications are also welcome from university students currently studying in an educational/sports/social care/ youth work or related subject area.

Service Overview

St Helens Youth Justice Service is an ambitious, vibrant and forward-thinking service working in an environment focused on supporting children towards their brighter futures. We are committed to Child First approaches and are strong in our advocacy for children.

We are a diverse team consisting of staff from the local authority, probation, police and health. We are proud to have a workforce which represents and reflects the children & families we work alongside, and we are committed to creating a culture which is inclusive and challenges discrimination and bias.

The Youth Justice Service is a dedicated service for children aged 11+ who need support. We offer a wide range of non-statutory and statutory interventions to children who are experiencing difficulties and challenges where support cannot be provided by universal services alone. We have strong relationships with wider services & partnerships supporting children and their families to ensure that we can jointly deliver the best possible support and care.

Children’s Voice

In Youth & Justice we are committed to the voice and passionate about the participation of the children who access our services and support. We have developed a culture and ethos of children being at the heart of decision making across our service. We are fortunate to have children who are involved in our recruitment process and are looking forward to meeting interview candidates. You will be interviewed by our children who will have an equal part in selecting the best people to join our amazing team.

To be successful in this new post, you will…..

Experience of direct work with children and families in either case or group work situations AND evidence of establishing and maintaining mentoring relationships including gathering and acting upon child’s voice, and experience of developing and delivering training & group work.

Hold an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent AND have experience working with children and families

All posts are essential car users – you will need to hold a valid UK Drivers’ Licence and have access to a vehicle for work purposes.
