Job summary

As a Forest Operations Works Supervisor, you will deliver the day-to-day supervision of operational forestry programmes across Yorkshire Forest Districts Cleveland beat. Working closely with contractors, operational staff and colleagues to ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with the UK Forestry Standard, the UK Woodland Assurance Standard, and Forestry England's objectives.

Your work will directly influence how forestry operations are implemented through assisting and setting standards in all aspects of forestry and woodland management, helping to meet business plan targets whilst developing healthier, more resilient forests for future generations.

Job description

Key responsibilities & accountabilities

• Lead the day-to-day supervision and delivery of forestry operations, including timber harvesting, restocking and ground preparation, ride management, tree felling, fencing and wider vegetation management activities, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, within budget and to the required standards.
• Supervise contractors and Forestry England staff on site, ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements and taking prompt corrective action where necessary.
• Ensure all work is delivered efficiently and to required specifications, quality standards and timescales, promoting high standards.
• Undertake site assessments and surveys to support operational planning and decision-making, including timber measurements, maintain stock records and other forestry-related assessments.
• Oversee the day-to-day management of beat facilities, ensuring they remain safe, compliant, environmentally responsible and fit for purpose.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Forestry England colleagues, contractors, landowners, neighbours, stakeholders, customers and members of the public, communicating professionally and confidently.
• Undertake other duties reasonably requested by your Line Manager.
• And any other tasks, reasonably requested by your line manager.

Person specification

Skills, knowledge & experience

Essential professional and technical experience

• Proven track record of planning, supervising and delivering forestry or land management operations, and/or hold a recognised Forestry qualification or similar qualification to National Diploma level
• Experience of supervising contractors and monitoring operational performance against agreed standards, specifications and timescales.
• An ability to work effectively as part of a team and build productive working relationships with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders.
• Sound knowledge and application of health, safety and environmental requirements within forestry, land management or related operational environments.
• Good understanding of forestry industry standards, best practice and operational procedures.
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience of collecting, analysing and recording operational, or forestry-related data.
• Competent IT user with experience of Microsoft Office applications and maintaining accurate operational records.

Desirable professional and technical experience

• Experience of using (forestry) Geographic Information System.

Qualifications

Essential

• Full UK driving license

Desirable

• A recognised Forestry, Arboriculture, Countryside Management or related qualification at National Diploma level (Level 3) or above.
• A GCSE in Math’s and English or functional skills equivalent.
