<h4>Job summary</h4><p>As part of the Scientific Analysis Group within the UKHO, the Geodesy team ensure that the UKHO’s navigational products are accurately positioned. The team provide geodetic expertise and support across the production flowline, from receipt of data to providing final checks before delivery. The team provides technical advice and support across MoD, other Government departments and the maritime community. </p><p>The purpose of this role, in conjunction with the Geodesy, Remote Sensing and Tides Team Manager, Principal Technical Specialists and other aligned Technical Leads, is to deliver innovation, change and technical solutions to the team’s problems and emerging business requirements.</p><p>Lead Geospatial Specialists are responsible for providing high level technical input and leadership; leading the team through change initiatives, finding and implementing technical solutions to problems experienced within the Team/Group, and ensuring the direction of the team is aligned to wider business direction and priorities.</p><p><strong>Hybrid working</strong></p><p>There will be opportunities to work in a hybrid way, depending on individual needs and the needs of the team – this will be agreed in discussion with the Team Manager. In order to undertake the role effectively, this is likely to mean being able to attend the office in Taunton 1 to 2 days a week as a minimum – or more often as required to support the team or project activity.</p><p></p><p><br><br></p><h4>Job description</h4><p><strong>Geospatial data capture and modelling/ Geospatial data manipulation </strong></p><ul><li>As the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Geodetic and PNT (Position, Navigation &amp; Timing) data processing, databasing, and archiving, drive the continuous improvement of UKHO's geodetic procedures, with reference to relevant IHO standards.</li><li>Manage and coordinate the technical component of GNSS risk and impact on geodetic and PNT data collection.</li></ul><p><strong>Geospatial data management </strong></p><ul><li>Provide technical advice to Data Stewards with regards to geodetic data – including guidance on developing data strategy, supporting data management, and adapting to future industry needs. </li></ul><p><strong>Geospatial data standards and quality </strong></p><ul><li>Lead the design and oversee the processes which provide the analysis and processing of incoming complex geodetic datasets within agreed timeframes and schedules. The writing of verification reports and the promulgation of verified data to the other systems that require it. </li></ul><p><strong>Geospatial software and systems </strong></p><ul><li>Build/maintain relationships with equipment/software manufacturers and survey contractors in order to consult on the best formats, systems, and practices. Ensure use of geodetic data and technology aligns with current best available practice throughout UKHO systems and processes.</li><li>As PNT SME, keep up to date with emerging risks around weaknesses in GNSS and the impact on UKHO products and services, engaging with UKHO internal stakeholders.</li></ul><p><strong>Capability Building </strong></p><ul><li>Role model the behaviours and sharing of expertise expected of a Lead Specialist and provide ongoing technical mentoring for those developing along the technical pathway.</li><li>Advise on best practise for survey collection for Hydrographic Programmes, Defence Hydrographic Programmes and Royal Navy survey teams.</li><li>Deliver or advise on the delivery of specialist geodetic training for UKHO staff, at all levels and provide training to overseas organisations to support External Engagement objectives, when required.</li><li>Act as the UKHO representative as an influential member of multiple working groups, including those with influence on Government policy, for Geodesy &amp; Position, Navigation and Timing such as the Maritime Interference Group, Royal Institute of Navigation PNT Working Group and the UK PNT Office Community of Practice.</li><li>Build / maintain close working relationships with relevant external stakeholders and Government bodies such as DSIT, Ordnance Survey, Royal Institute of Navigation and the UK National PNT Office. <h4>Job summary</h4><p>Every year, the Court invites applications for up to 11 Judicial Assistants to support the work of the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC). The role provides a unique opportunity for talented junior lawyers to work closely with the Justices, to observe some of the UK’s top advocates and to see how appeals are decided at the highest level. </p><p>Due to the nature of the Court’s work, in the past the majority of Judicial Assistants have been qualified to practise as a solicitor, barrister or advocate in one of the UK jurisdictions and have had some practical experience in those professions. However, the Court recognises that the most important quality needed for the role is intellectual ability and it therefore also strongly encourages applications from non-qualified candidates able to demonstrate outstanding academic knowledge of the UK legal system and advanced experience in legal research, as detailed in the eligibility requirements set out below. </p><h4>Job description</h4><p>Each Judicial Assistant is assigned, typically, to a single Justice. The Judicial Assistants’ responsibilities include:</p><ol><li>Conducting legal research on appeals and applications for permission to appeal</li><li>Drafting bench memos summarising applications for permission to appeal</li><li>Attending appeal hearings and discussing them with the Justices</li><li>Drafting legally accurate, plain English press summaries of judgments for publication on the Court’s website</li><li>Generally assisting the Justices in their work, including with any extra-judicial speeches, articles and other publications</li><li>Responding to requests for information from international judicial and comparative law networks</li><li>Supporting the Court’s educational and outreach activity, including the annual mooting and Ask a Justice programmes</li><li>Assisting the Court’s Registrar with regards to applications for permission to appeal and appeals.</li></ol><p>From the perspective of aspiring solicitors, barristers and advocates, the role is extremely well regarded within the legal profession, with many Judicial Assistants going on to secure pupillage or training contracts at leading chambers or firms. Others have gone on to have successful careers in government or in academia.</p><h4>Person specification</h4><p><strong>Required for the role:</strong></p><p>1. Excellent academic record. The UK Supreme Court hears appeals that give rise to the most challenging and complex legal issues. Many successful candidates for the role therefore hold a first-class undergraduate degree. However, the Court recognises that grades must be considered in context and it therefore also considers excellent applications from candidates with a 2.1 undergraduate degree who can demonstrate strong academic ability</p><p>2.Qualified to practise as a solicitor, barrister or advocate in one of the UK jurisdictions by 1 October 2026 or have the qualifications specified in (3) below.</p><p>3. For those who are not qualified to practise as a solicitor, barrister or advocate in one of the UK jurisdictions by 1 October 2026, we require further evidence of outstanding academic knowledge of the UK legal system and advanced experience in legal research evidenced by:</p><p> a. The job holder will undertake a full range of work with the offender whilst resident at the Approved Premises. This will include; providing support in contributing to the risk management and sentence plan objectives and reporting any significant changes relating to risk and/or re-offending to any non-compliance within agreed enforcement procedures to ensure that offenders resident at an AP and the fabric of it are kept safe and secure throughout their shift.</p><p><strong>Summary</strong></p><p>The job holder will assist in the well-being and supervision of residents, maintaining discipline, adherence to AP rules, licence conditions, sentence plan objectives specific to residency in the Approved Premises and court orders. In addition, will contribute to the management of residents’ risk. This post will involve substantial out of hours work, both waking night duty and weekend work. The post holder may be required to cover duties at other Approved Premises at times of staff absence.</p><p>In line with PS policies and procedures, the job holder must at all times demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion and an understanding of their relevance to the work they do.</p><p>The post holder must adhere to all policies in respect of the sensitive/confidential nature of the information handled whilst working in this position.</p><p><strong>Responsibilities, Activities &amp; Duties</strong></p><p>The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:</p><p>• Contribute to effective team practice, communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues to ensure consistency of work practices and positive working environment.</p><p>• Effectively communicate key risk issues to colleagues at handover and throughout the shift. It will also, at times, require communicating with Offender Managers, Stand-by Manager and partner agencies e.g. Police, Health professionals and drug/alcohol services.</p><p>• Undertake regular inspections of the building, including cellars and grounds throughout the period of duty, recording any occurrences/damage or defects, and monitor CCTV equipment.</p><p>• Maintain an active presence in the AP at all times. Regularly engage with residents in a pro-social manner. Contribute towards the protection of the residents through observation to ensure adherence to their risk management plans and general wellbeing.</p><p>• Actively engage with and monitor behaviour of high risk residents and motivate residents to ensure compliance. Challenge and manage appropriately abusive or aggressive behaviour.</p><p>• Contribute to the risk management plans of residents by observing and reporting any significant changes relating to risk and/or re-offending to any non-compliance within agreed enforcement procedures.</p><p>• Contribute to the sentence plan objectives of the residents through active engagement in purposeful activities as agreed by the AP Manager and Offender Manager.</p><p>• Ensure that the AP is locked and secure during curfew period. Confirm the presence and wellbeing of all residents overnight.</p><p>• Facilitate the function of the AP as a first/emergency point of contact out of hours.</p><p>• Through observation and/or engagement with residents, provide accurate information, analysis of situation and risk assessment to the Offender Manager and/or escalate to Out of Hours Manager, which may lead to enforcement and/or compliance with court orders, licences, AP rules.</p><p>• Support, create and maintain a safe working environment for staff, residents and visitors by adhering to Health and Safety legislation, ensuring Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Risk Assessments are followed reporting incidents to Manager.</p><p>• Undertake Health and Safety, fire alarm, curfews and room curfew checks in line with procedures.</p><p>• Undertake pre-arranged or initiate room searches based on concerns around risk.</p><p>• Pack up residents’ possessions as directed.</p><p>• Set up and /or deliver purposeful activities linked to residents’ sentence plan objectives as agreed by the Offender Manager and AP Manager.</p><p>• Supervise residents’ meals.</p><p>• Undertake effective induction of residents.</p><p>• Follow prescribed medication procedures including the issuing of medication to residents and both weekly and nightly audit of medication sheets.</p><p>• To carry out drug and alcohol tests in line with risk management plan which may include times when job holder believes that the resident maybe under the influence and therefore increase in risk.</p><p>• Undertake First Aid if a resident is injured or self-harms.</p><p>• Maintain Approved Premises records and files as required, including data entry as necessary and contribute to the completion of incident reports.</p><p>• Carry out safeguarding children duties in accordance with the PS statutory responsibilities and agency policies.</p><p>• Deal with visitors and telephone calls, and monitor the work of visiting contractors in accordance with health and safety.</p><p>• Demonstrate pro-social modelling skills by consistently reinforcing pro-social behaviour and attitudes and challenging anti-social behaviour and attitudes.</p><p>• To work within the aims and values of PS and HMPPS.</p><p>The duties/responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present and is not intended to be exhaustive.
