Hackney's historic markets are where early mornings meet local pride. As a&nbsp;Market Stall Operative, you’ll be part of a hardworking, high-performing team that sets up the borough’s iconic markets before most people are even awake.
You’ll work across Hackney’s street trading sites to build, dismantle, and safely store stalls, gazebos, barriers, tables and lighting — ensuring everything is in place and running smoothly for our traders and visitors. You’ll handle heavy kit, work in all weathers, and be one of the most visible faces of our frontline team — helping traders access their stalls, resolving issues on the ground, and reporting safety concerns as they arise.
<h3>What the Role Involves</h3>
- Set up and take down stalls, gazebos, tables, and lighting systems
- Load and unload materials from storage containers and trailers
- Install barriers, signage and electrical cables safely and correctly
- Keep market areas clean, clear and hazard-free during and after trade

You will be the first point of contact for traders and customers, providing high-quality service and resolving issues with a calm and confident approach. This dynamic role involves being out on the market for 80% of your trading day, monitoring activities, checking licenses, and ensuring adherence to regulations. You'll play a vital part in:
- Supporting Traders:&nbsp;Assisting with stall setup and breakdown, and building positive relationships with license holders.
- Ensuring Compliance:&nbsp;Carrying out regular checks on stall sizes, commodities, and licenses, and advising traders on their responsibilities. You'll also identify and report any breaches, supporting enforcement action.

- Maintaining Standards:&nbsp;Reporting defects, ensuring market cleanliness, and managing public highway obstructions.

You’ll follow RoSPA and Southwark Council procedures to stop traffic safely, give clear instructions, and keep an eye on site conditions, reporting any incidents or defective street furniture promptly. You’ll use the provided PPE correctly, conduct dynamic risk assessments, and work closely with the School and the School Crossing Patrol Manager to keep everyone safe.Training (including safeguarding and conflict management) is provided. Hours: 10 per week during term time, typically 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon (windows usually between 07:45–09:30 and 14:45–16:30). We are looking for Helping Volunteers to join our team at our new site based near Liverpool Street. Helping Volunteers are responsible for welcoming visitors onto our premises, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere (along with a cup of tea), and supporting our Listening Volunteers to help everything run smoothly.
We are looking for volunteers who have the empathy to greet distressed visitors, the willingness to undertake a variety of admin and other tasks and the resilience to support their team.&nbsp; Our HVs need to be proactive, self-starters and team players with a basic understanding of IT. We ask for a weekly commitment of four hours for a period of at least six months.

In order to ensure continuity for our visitors we require a one-year minimum commitment from our LVs, as well as three months’ notice of intention to leave.
No experience or qualifications are necessary – we provide full training in active listening.&nbsp; We look for warmth, empathy and resilience in our volunteers and the ability to be non-judgemental and avoid giving advice.
