Question 1

Are there entry-level property management jobs available?

Accepted Answer

Entry-level property management roles are available across the public sector. Local authorities and housing associations regularly recruit for positions such as Property Assistant, Estates Assistant, and Trainee Property Manager. These roles typically don't require prior property management experience, though employers often look for strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and good communication abilities.

Many organisations offer structured training and support towards professional qualifications such as RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) or IWFM (Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management) membership. Starting in an assistant role provides practical experience in areas like lease administration, property inspections, and tenant liaison — building a foundation for progression to Property Officer or Property Manager positions.

Question 2

What types of organisations hire property managers in the public sector?

Accepted Answer

Property managers are employed across a wide range of public sector organisations. Local authorities are among the largest employers, managing council housing stock, commercial property portfolios, and civic estates. Housing associations recruit property and asset managers to oversee residential properties and plan long-term maintenance programmes.

Central government departments, and educational institutions including universities and academy trusts also maintain dedicated property teams. Additionally, arm's-length management organisations (ALMOs) and public sector property partnerships offer specialist property management roles. These organisations manage assets on behalf of councils or combine resources across multiple public bodies.

Question 3

Do property managers work weekends?

Accepted Answer

Most public sector property management roles follow standard office hours, typically Monday to Friday. Unlike facilities management or housing officer positions that may require out-of-hours emergency response, property managers generally work regular daytime schedules.

However, some variation exists, depending on the role. Property managers responsible for commercial lettings or community buildings may occasionally attend weekend viewings or events. Those in asset management or strategic property roles rarely require weekend working.

Job adverts typically specify working patterns, so check individual vacancy details for confirmation. Many public sector employers now offer flexible working arrangements, including compressed hours or hybrid working, which can provide additional flexibility around your schedule.
