Job Description

Displaced People Resettlement Worker – Children Services – Croydon Council

Salary: Grade 8 £40,182-£42,060
12 month Fixed Term Contract/Secpondment – 36 hours per week

Job Purpose

Through the process of completing a comprehensive assessment of need, supported where needed by interpretation services, the worker will help individuals and families to find support and advice where required and support to access this by practice case support.

Postholders will have an allocated group of Home Office accommodation sites where they will develop effective and supportive professional relationships with regular attendance to ensure residents are aware of services available and safeguarding is considered at every visit. Post holders will support babies, children, young people, their families and vulnerable adults that live in Home Office accommodation. They will also support families who have come to live in Croydon through the resettlement schemes and Homes for Ukraine Programme. All work undertaken will consider how a partnership approach would support displaced people and addressed in the plan.


The Asylum Seekers and Displaced People team is a new service that has developed to support the needs of displaced people in Croydon. Working within the Future Croydon plan and its commitment to connect with residents and transforming services, the service coordinates the Council’s cross cutting response to support for displaced people in Croydon who have arrived through Visa or Resettlement Schemes or are accommodated in Home Office (NASS) accommodation.

Displaced people arrive in Croydon through the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, Afghan Humanitarian Schemes, ARAP and ACRS which are funded routes and other legal routes such as family reunification and sponsored visas. People also arrive at Croydon who are seeking asylum. All those arriving have experienced war or persecution that has meant they have had to leave their home country and as such they have, and continue to experience trauma often affecting their physical and mental health and wellbeing To date Croydon has welcomed over 700 people through the Homes for Ukraine Programme, 40 People through the Afghan resettlement Schemes and is home to 1200 asylum seekers at any one time, who are living in Home Office accommodation.

About You
Significant experience in a relevant field which may include Social work, Teaching, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Youth Work, Counselling, Probation, Health professions, Education, Early Years.

Knowledge and understanding of recent research and evidence-based practice in relation to working with displaced adults, children and young people who are resettling, seeking a place of safety through legal routes and those that are seeking asylum and are supported by the Home Office.
Knowledge of evidence-based approaches to direct and intensive work with displaced people.
Knowledge of research and evidence base of factors that affect displaced people and their families.

Experience of making a significant contribution to the development of new services or ways of working, breaking down barriers where there is resistance and being solution focussed.
Ability to work independently and directly displaced people in a range of environments, including their homes which may be hotel or hostel accommodation, and possibly outside ‘core’ working hours.
Ability to be reflective and evaluate learning needs, actively seeking learning opportunities that improve practice and impact on service outcomes.
Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality boundaries.
Evidence of substantial experience of direct work displaced people or other marginalised groups within variety of settings and communities and from a range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds-including those who may not have previously accessed services.

Salary range
