Job Introduction

We’re recruiting an Educational Psychologist to join our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities service at Milton Keynes City Council. In this rewarding role, you’ll use psychology creatively to help improve outcomes for children and young people across Milton Keynes.

You’ll contribute through casework, project work and wider service initiatives, while providing high-quality psychological advice to colleagues in Children and Families and partner agencies.

A key part of the role is supporting the Educational, Health and Care needs assessment process and helping ensure children, young people and families receive informed, child-centred support. At Milton Keynes City Council, our aim is to make our city a better place to live, and we do that by working as one council, focusing on what matters, and making every day count for residents.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Interview Dates

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Candidates may be invited to interview as applications are received.

We’re building a team that’s focused on making a real difference across our local area. Working with partners, services and communities, you’ll help bring people together, drive collaboration and support improvements that have a lasting impact.

In this role, you’ll play an important part in delivering key priorities, helping shape better experiences and outcomes while ensuring our work stays aligned with both local needs and national expectations. It’s a chance to be part of meaningful, system-wide change where your contribution really matters.

Role Responsibilities
  • Contribute to positive outcomes for children and young people through casework, projects and wider educational psychology service activity.
  • Provide psychological advice to colleagues in Children and Families and other agencies, including advice as part of Educational, Health and Care needs assessments.
  • Deliver consultation, assessment and intervention work in line with recognised good practice and the evidence base in educational psychology.
  • Plan and deliver high-quality training for a wide range of audiences.
  • Provide a psychological perspective to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities panel processes to support decision making and the effective use of resources.
  • Work in partnership with children, families, colleagues and other organisations to promote early intervention, integrated local solutions and family-centred practice.
Ideal Candidate
  • A qualified Educational Psychologist with a good honours degree in Psychology, or an equivalent Master’s degree, and a postgraduate qualification in Educational Psychology recognised by the British Psychological Society.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist and committed to maintaining continuing professional development.
  • Bring experience of applying psychological knowledge and skills in practice, with the confidence to work at individual, group and organisational level.
  • You’ll be a clear and thoughtful communicator who can produce high-quality written work and explain complex matters with care and clarity.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively, you’ll contribute positively to shared goals and build strong working relationships across professional boundaries.
  • Just as importantly, you’ll reflect our values by being dedicated in your work, respectful in your approach and collaborative in the way you support children, families, colleagues and partners.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, (unless you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service).

About The Organisation

Milton Keynes City Council is a large, modern and financially stable employer with around 2,500 people working across our eight areas. Together we provide local residents and businesses with a wide range of important round-the-clock services and aim to make our city a better place to live.

We work hard because of the demands placed on us, like protecting children from harm or preventing homelessness. However, working for the city is always rewarding and everyone has the opportunity to make a real difference.

We’re very proud of our diversity and are committed to having a workforce that reflects the community we serve. Whatever your background, you will be welcome here if you share our values of being dedicated, respectful and collaborative.

We offer great training and support and because of the size and scale of the organisation there are always new opportunities to explore when it’s time for a new role.
