Join the British Transport Police as a Transferee PCSO

Join us at British Transport Police (BTP) as we recruit Transferee Police Community Support Officers and make a real difference in communities across the UK rail network.

Superintendent David Rams said:
"Our Police Community Support Officers are an integral part of our British Transport Police family. They carry out vital work across the railway network to keep passengers and staff safe. We care deeply about our PCSOs, who deliver an exceptional service to communities across England, Wales and Scotland."

Is this role for you?

Are you already a serving PCSO and ready for a new challenge in a unique policing environment

We are inviting substantive PCSOs from Home Office forces across the country to transfer to British Transport Police. We are the national police force responsible for policing the railways and stations across Great Britain.

Our PCSOs play a vital role in frontline policing, providing reassurance, building relationships, and supporting safe travel for millions of passengers every day.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and strongly encourage women to apply. We are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and creating an environment where everyone can thrive and progress.

The role

Like Home Office PCSOs, BTP PCSOs focus on community engagement and enforcing BTP Byelaws within the railway environment.

This is a varied and dynamic role where no two days are the same. Responsibilities include:

  • Visible patrols at stations and across the rail network
  • Supporting victims and safeguarding vulnerable people
  • Addressing anti-social behaviour
  • Assisting with minor investigations
  • Managing security risks and supporting counter terrorism activity
  • Building relationships with passengers, rail staff and partner agencies
  • Supporting Police Officers on the frontline

Unlike many Home Office forces, BTP PCSOs are trained and equipped with handcuffs.

We are looking for confident, resilient individuals with excellent communication and customer service skills. A genuine passion for community engagement and partnership working is essential.

You must be prepared to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

Locations

This is a nationwide opportunity, with roles available across England, Scotland and Wales.

Successful applicants will join a national pool and may be deployed to a range of locations depending on operational need. This includes major rail hubs, regional stations and key transport routes across the network.

Why transfer to BTP?

  • Work in a fast paced national policing environment
  • Engage with thousands of passengers every day and make a visible impact
  • Be part of a supportive and inclusive culture that values your experience
  • Access ongoing learning and development with clear progression opportunities
  • Opportunity to progress to Police Constable
  • Pay and annual leave reviewed in line with your current service where possible

What we are looking for

  • Currently serving as a substantive PCSO and have passed probation
  • Strong experience in community engagement and operational policing
  • Professional, approachable and confident communicators
  • High levels of integrity and situational awareness
  • Committed to building trust and confidence in policing

Eligibility

You will be ineligible if:

  • You are not currently serving as a PCSO
  • You have been unsuccessful for a BTP PCSO role within the last 6 months
  • You have failed BTP vetting within the past 12 months
  • You have received a custodial sentence
  • You have been dismissed from a force or have a live investigation
  • You have unmanaged financial issues such as bankruptcy or a CCJ

  • You do not have the right to work in the UK
  • You have not lived in the UK continuously for the past 3 years
