About this job

Barking and Dagenham has a vibrant community, with lots of organisations wanting to hold events in the borough’s parks and open spaces, from small prayer gatherings to big ticketed music festivals. Elrow Town London and Highlights are just two of the music festivals to have been hosted in the borough and we are keen to work with other promoters. The Events Engagement and Civic Support Officer will play a key role in helping make sure these events run smoothly, by being a key point of contact for these organisations and providing advice and admin support.

The role will also assist with the team with running the Mayor's office, which will include helping to manage the Mayor’s diary, helping to organise civic events (e.g. Remembrance services), and helping to organise fundraising events to support the Mayor in raising funds for their chosen charity. Working with the Events Manager, you will go on site visits, minute meetings, undertake financial tasks and work with volunteers to help support the Mayor in their fundraising efforts.

The role is for 6 months and would be ideal for someone wanting to gain some experience of the events world, who wants to work in a role where no two days are the same.

Special requirements for this post

Some evening and weekend working will be required but advance notice and TOIL (Time Off In Lieu) will be given. There will be occasions where you may be needed to travel across the borough with other members of the team, for example to a site visit in a park, but the majority of work will be done either in the Town Hall (3 days in the office) or working from home (2 days).

About you

Previous experience of providing PA support or working in events would be helpful but isn’t necessary. What’s more important is that you are organised, have good IT skills, can juggle different projects and deadlines, and know how to prioritise your workload. We are looking for someone enthusiastic who can work on their own or as part of a team, with fresh ideas and a willingness to learn. This role involves working directly with elected members, voluntary groups, other council services, emergency services and music promoters so we are looking for someone able to build relationships with people at different levels and use judgement and discretion where necessary.
