We are looking for our next apprentice! This is an exciting opportunity to gain a Chartered Town Planner Masters degree whilst working and gaining hands on experience in planning. The post is for three years and for the first two (starting in September 2025) you will attend Brighton University for one day a week to undertake the degree apprentice qualification. In the work place you will have your own workload and undertake a range of planning tasks including assisting with the processing and validation of planning applications, writing reports on different types of applications, and assisting more senior team members in preparing their reports.
As you learn and develop your skills and knowledge you will be able to respond to enquiries from the public, carry out site visits and liaise with colleagues and external agencies. The role will adapt and&nbsp; develop across the three years so you will gain a good knowledge of the work of a planning department.
You will need a higher Second Class degree in an appropriate subject, or an equivalent qualification to be eligible for this apprenticeship and you cannot already have a masters degree. You will need to be accepted on to the course and be ready to start in September 2025.
The job is based at the Civic Centre in Littlehampton and this will be your contractual job location. However, it is likely there will be some working from home and so will need an appropriate space to work from.
Whilst not essential a driving licence/access to a car will help you get the most out of the job as it involves attending site visits, generally starting in the second year.

About The Role
A Senior Planner will help with the delivery of major sites; leading on complex and major planning applications, liaising with developers, applicants and senior officers, conducting negotiations and presenting applications to Planning Committee. The appointment will be commensurate with experience.

About The Team You’ll Be Working In
Hounslow are looking for a Career Grade Planner to join their award-winning Development Management Team. The team are currently working on a wealth of planning applications critical to the social and economic wellbeing of the borough. We have high housing targets to achieve, new schools to place children in and need to create opportunities for employers who want to be in our well located borough. This must be balanced against acting on the boroughs Climate Emergency and with Green Belt, listed buildings, conservation areas and River Thames frontage that need protecting. About the role&nbsp;
As part of the GLA Oxford Street Transformation team, the post holder will contribute to developing operational proposals for the transfer of planning functions to a new Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) to manage the regeneration of Oxford Street in line with the Mayor’s proposals and working closely with boroughs partners, GLA teams and relevant government departments in the process. If a decision is subsequently made to create the MDC (subject to the outcome of a recent consultation), the post holder will contribute to setting up its planning department and would be expected to transfer to its Development Management team—contributing to the delivery of an efficient and proactive Development Management and planning service by managing a diverse caseload of planning applications and supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the team.

What your day will look like&nbsp;
As part of the GLA Oxford Street Transformation team:

<li>To lead on the development of proposals to deliver a high quality, effective and efficient development management and planning service in line with Mayoral proposals to establish a new MDC to manage the regeneration of Oxford Street.</li>

As part of the MDC, if established:

<li>Manage and assess a diverse caseload of planning applications in accordance with agreed performance targets by ensuring prompt registration and validation, consultation with stakeholders and compliance with statutory requirements. Prepare written reports for decision securing positive planning outcomes that contribute to the delivery of planning and regeneration objectives for Oxford Street.</li>
<li>Proactively evaluate pre-application proposals, advising on planning policy compliance, the form and content of planning applications, procedural matters and all other relevant planning issues and negotiating Planning Performance Agreements as appropriate.</li>
<li>Line manage Senior Planning Officers and other planning staff as appropriate and supervise their work on planning applications and pre-application proposals.</li>
<li>Prepare statements of case and proofs of evidence that robustly defend&nbsp; planning decisions at appeal. Represent the Corporation at public inquiries and informal hearings.</li>

<li>Possession of an appropriate planning qualification with eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute together with good post qualification experience in planning.</li>

About the role:
Horsham District Council is offering a 3-month placement as a Graduate Planner (Work Experience) to students or recent graduates of a planning related course within the Development and Building Control department. This opportunity will give you valuable practical planning work experience for your future career.
As a Graduate Planner you will have the opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day work of the Development Management team through the processing of a variety of planning applications and carrying out other duties associated with the planning application process. Such duties include dealing with householder pre- application enquiries, planning history requests, duty phone calls and determination of householder applications including the preparation of Officer reports and site visits.
About you:
To succeed as a Graduate Planner, you will have a degree in a subject relevant to planning or working towards one, and you will have a professional attitude, good communication skills and be capable of working on your own initiative to meet deadlines. A full current driving licence, with recent driving experience is essential for the role as you will be visiting development sites and attending meetings across the Horsham District. An understanding of town planning legislation with experience of working in a local planning authority is not essential but would be an advantage.
