About us

The ancient Chamberlain’s Court, based at Guildhall has been responsible for administering the Freedom of the City, a historic fellowship that has underwritten the civic life of the City of London for several centuries. It remains busy and dynamic, serving a wide range of stakeholders from the London and International community. The Court remains committed to its historic traditions whilst striving to embrace modern work practices and to embrace change.

The Role

We are looking for a friendly reliable Court Assistant to join our small friendly office to support the work of our Court Ushers (Beadles) and our Clerks and Registrar by providing cover at busy periods and to assist with our administrative and commercial processes. It offers a rare opportunity to become involved in ceremonial activities along with the opportunity to work in a small friendly office at the centre of City life and history.

About you

We are looking for an individual who is:

  • A strong communicator, able to interact with a wide range of individuals in a friendly, helpful and diplomatic manner

  • Has strong administrative skills, with experience in a public sector, heritage, legal or membership organisation

  • A skilled user of digital media and software, particularly databases and Windows Office software

  • Is able to understand budgets and help support our commercial and retail enterprise

  • Comfortable with public speaking and able to supervise and direct groups and individuals

  • Has a level of fitness that enables them to work on their feet for part of the day and undertake moderate physical lifting

  • Has an interest and enthusiasm for history and a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about the City of London, it’s historic institutions and Livery Companies

The role will generally involve two days a week, Wednesday and Thursday on site, but we are looking for an applicant who can be flexible and move their working days on occasion, but these will only be weekdays. In return we offer a role with great variety and good working conditions.

If this role is advertised as a secondment, secondments are subject to the agreement of your department releasing you, therefore, you need to discuss this with your line manager prior to applying. The purpose of this will be to discuss what, if any, impact your secondment might have on the service and service delivery should your application be successful, and how this might be addressed.

The City of London Corporation is currently undergoing a programme to ensure that our pay and reward practices are competitive and equitable across the whole organisation, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the work that we do.

Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.

For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.

We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
